Title
Letter from Henry to Francis, May 31, 1869
Subject
Cantonese dialects; Agriculture; Sabbath schools; Presidents--Term of office--United States; Persecution--China
Description
Henry writes to Frank from Canton and wishes him well. He has been translating the New Testament into Colloquial Cantonese. He reminisces about planting corn and potatoes in Seville and regrets that Dr. Allen and Mr. Hamsher are leaving the Sabbath School. He has high hopes for President Grant's term and does not think he could possibly do worse than the previous President. He reports more violence against newcomers in China but believes Canton to be safe.

Canton May 31st 1869
My dear Brother Frank
You are I suppose
31 years old to-day & I
take my pen just as the
day is leaving us and pas-
sing over to you to send
my best wishes & a hope
that you may see many more
birth days & that each suc-
ceeding one may find you
one year advanced in that
path of the just which shineth
more & more unto the perfect
day. It is just 8 days more
than three years since I ar-
rived in Canton but sometimes
it seems a long long while. The
time slips away faster now
that I have got somewhat into
work than it used to. I have
this month finished what has
been my main business lately namely
writing out the whole New Testa-
ment in Canton Colloquial. It
has been just about a year since
I commenced it & now I am
going to try to begin to preach
a little but expect I shall make
pretty poor work of it.
I wonder what you are
all doing at home. Sugar
making is over & I expect
during this month you have
been busy getting the corn
& potatoes planted. Do you
remember the time that you
& Hattie & Old Fan & I planted
the Elder field so fast that
the neighbors [--that--] thought
we had a machine to do
it with. Poor Hattie's face
looked so red & she got very
tired. But she had a right to
be for it was doing pretty
well for a girl of 12 years old
to keep up with the furrower
dropping corn, to say nothing
about your "covering".
We are sorry to learn
that so many of the good
people are going away from
Seville. I am sorry that Dr
Allen & Mr Hamsher thought
they must go away. They will
both be missed very much
in the Sabbath School. If you
ever see them you must re-
member me kindly to them.
I suppose Gen Grant
by this time is pretty well
settled down in the Presidential
chair. I hope he will do better
than his predecessor did. I
guess there is no danger
of his doing worse. I think
we have got a good President
& Vice President both this time.
I suppose you see by the
Recorder notices of some outbreaks
against foreigners occasionally
in China, especially at Jangchow
& Formosa. I believe they are
satisfactorily settled now at
both places. I suppose the
Chinese put up with foreigners
as a necessity rather than
a thing to be desired, but
they never offer violence to
them in this part of the country
under ordinary circumstances
The streets of Canton are
just as safe, I am inclined
to think more safe than those
of many of our cities at home
But I must close. With very much
love Your own Bro Henry.

Give my best regards to Mr & Mrs Shaw & Davis I am
glad to know that they do not forget us.
