Wednesday Jun 8th 1873
My dear Sister Clara
The mail came
in last night bringing a
good budget of letters from
home. I am much obliged
to you for dreaming about
Hattie + me so often. I wish
I could dream of home oftener
than I do. But I don't want
your dream to come true
in all respects. When I get
home I don't want to have
to say to anybody that I
"can only stay three hours,"
I feel so sorry about your poor
thumb but of course it was
to be so. I hope it will get
so that you can use it in
play ing on the melodeon or
piano. As to Em's graduating

of course she must graduate.
I Expressed my sentiments
to [--ver--] her very freely in
my last letter. I hope she
will get it. Tell her from
me that we want her to
graduate on our account if
not her own. I want her to
be the first lady graduate
now that she can and I
think she will be a very
good one for the Institution
to start off with too.
What a dreadful Epi-
demic that "Eperzootie" (or
whatever you call it is). I hope
it won't kill off all the
nice horses. They will
have to send out here
and get a lot of Chinese
coolies if horses. They can
manage most anything.

No horse or mule or ox
Ever draws anything into
the great city of Canton.
Everything in this great city
that is moved be it great
or small is moved the
strength of men and not
of beasts. Up in the country
however they plough with the
water ox, and also use
him in drawing wide carts.
They also have wheelbarrows,
but in Canton it is nothing
but the coolie and his pole.
We are having cold
weather thermometer down
to 48. Now don't laugh
It is cold out here when
the thermometer gets down
to that point and for
the last 2 or 3 days has
been dismally rainy.

We are in the midst of the
week of prayers and having very
good meetings. Your brother had
the sermon to preach Sabbath Evening
and the good brethren seemed
so well pleased with it that they
have asked me to have it printed
They promise to take 200 copies.
If I should have it printed I
will of course send you a
copy. The subject is that
given out by the Evangelical
Alliance or rather the last part
of it [illegible] "The Universal Ex-
tension of the Christian Church."
I hope to get time to write
to Hudson by this mail. Will
if I can. I must close this
as it most time to go to
our Evening prayer meeting.
With much love for all
Your Aff Bro
--Henry--
