Shanghai Oct 28th 1909
Dear Mary-
I have about half an
hour before a meeting at Eleven o
clock which I will improve in
writing home. I do not remember
just when I left off in writing to
Clara but will being by saying
that we arrived in Shanghai at
three-o-clock on Sunday Oct 24th.
We found that the first meeting
of the Conference would take place
on Thursday the 28th so we have
had several days to look around
have spent part of the time how-
ever in discussing Mission
matters.
The first day Monday after
attending to some matters of
business in the [?forenow?] we
went in the afternoon to call on
Dr. Farnham ( we means Dr Machle
and myself) - We were sorry to

find that Mrs. Farnham had
first been taken seriously ill
with dysentery. We had a pleasant
[?time?] however with Dr. Farnham.
He told us that the 29th of this
month [--he--] it will have been 50
years since he left New York
for China. He looks old +
I should think neither he [--and--] nor
Mrs. Farnham would be here
very much longer. When we
left, Dr. Farnham's horse and
carriage, or rather one which
his daughter had given him
the use of, was standing at
the door. He said the horse
was doing nothing and asked
us to take it and go wherever
we wished. We said that we
could get back without it all
right. But he said he would
rather we would take it than
not [--as--] to give it some exercise.
So we had quite a drive. [?We're?]

to see the printing works of the
"Commercial Press" [?au?] Establishment
which is entirely Chinese. It is
wonderful how they are going ahead.
They have a very large building,
several hundred feet long I should
think. I counted about 40
presses and most of them were
running. They have lithograph
stones and do the lithograph
printing make wood cuts and
halftone pictures for their books
and bind them, in fact have
the whole process of book making
going on. They sell them too in
large numbers, not only that
but they are preparing books,
especially school books, readers
Geographies, and other kinds.
Dr. Brown arrived on the
Evening of the 26th. He needed the
next day for correspondence.
He however gave Dr, Machle and me
an honor for talking about Canton

matters. He was very nice and
very fair. He himself suggested
that both Dr. Todd and Dr.
Selden might be honorary mem-
bers. He said he could not
speak for the Board and we
had probably [--not--] better not
speak of it until after he had
arrived at home and mentioned
it to the other secretaries.
Well it is nearly time
for meeting and I must close.
We have had rainy weather
almost Ever since arrival.
Had a letter from William this
morning[--for-] which tells us of
quite a strong gale they had
in Canton at the time of the
typhoon which I presume [--I've--] wrote
in my letter to Clara. We expect
to leave here on Saturday + reach
Canton the Tuesday following I suppose
it will not be very long mow
until we see Martha back again
A great deal of love to you all
from your Bro Henry

Machle
