Letter from Henry to Clara, May 13, 1907

Travel; Steamboats; Meetings; Missionaries; Friendly visiting

Henry writes to Clara from Shanghai about how he will be leaving in the morning. He expects to find Bella already onboard waiting for him. Henry had been at a missionary conference while Bella was in Hong Kong. Henry describes the steamboat which he also calls a "floating palace." He had heard that people were having to wait until July to get back to the United States but they are fortunate and will be in Seattle by early June. He plans to be getting back to Seville in early August and looks forward to seeing everyone in the family home.

Shanghai May 13th 1907
My dear Sister Clara;
I am trying to make up to some slight Extent
for my delinquences in the past by writing to Each one of my
sisters in the "Home on the Hill." I am here in Shanghai Expecting
to leave at 1/2 past 4 in the morning for the Minnesota which if
all has gone well will be at her achorage to-morrow morning-
The large steamers have to anchor in the big Yang [?Tze?] river
and send their passengers up by steam launch to Shanghai-
which is on a small branche of the Yang [?Tze?] river. I am
going in the morning in the launch that goes down to meet
passengers + Expect to find Bella on board. If she wishes
she can then come up in the launch and go back at
three-o-clock- She did not come up to the Conference
but took passage in the Minnesota on the 11th of May in
Hong Kong and I join her here. I Expect we shall find
that she is a very fine steamer- People who have been passengers
on her say so. She is a vessel of 28,000 tons quite different
from the little barque of 650 tons on which I came to China -
These great steamers are "floating palaces" compared with the
sailing vessels of the olden times. I Expect to find several
hundred passengers on board. The steamers are usually crowded
at this season of the year, but the Missionary Conference has made
it specially so this year. If we had not Engaged our passage
in good time we could not have gone just now. I heard yesterday
of some one who wished to go to U.S.A who would have to wait till
July- Fortunately we are all right- We Expect to reach Seattle
June 6th. Jeanette Kelly is to be married before the End of
the month. We shall probably stay in Seattle through July and come
to Seville Early in August- so as to be there when Sarah is at home.
Will write again when we reach Seattle.
I had a very nice place to stay during the Conference
though it was so far out of the city that it took me half an hour to

go to the Conference rooms in a jinrieksha. It was at a
merchant's house but they were not of the kind that try to put
on style. They lived very nicely Every way but made one feel
Entirely at home. Mrs Marshall was originally a single lady
missionary of the Methodist Church U.S.A. She had a sister also
who was a missionary and who was taken ill. She went home
with her and on the way met Mr Marshall an Englishman became
Engaged- was married and lived in London for awhile and
came out here about 16 months ago- He does not Expect to stay
out here very long. I think he Expects to be back and forth
attending to business at both Ends of the line- now in London
and now out here- I believe he Expects to Establish branch firms
also in other places. He seems much interested in Y.M.C.A here
I think is President of it. A young man who is to be in the firm
arrived a day or two sooner than was Expected an as I had the
room that he would occupy I moved to the [illegible] Missionary Home
where Mattie was staying and was there from Saturday Morning
till Thursday morning when I went up to Soochow and remained
with Dr Hayes and family until this Monday morning- had a very
pleasant visit- You may be acquainted with them as they were
about two years I think in Wooster-
I am looking forward to seeing you all in the old home
not very long from now- and that will be much better than writing
I Expect to meet bella on the Minnesota to-morrow morning- left William
and Mary well- am glad to leave my work in such good hands
