Subject
Family; Health; Corn--Harvesting time; Money; Gifts
Description
Varnum Noyes writes to Harriet about what is going on at home. Edward got hurt six weeks ago and has been bedridden ever since. Varnum thinks that it will be a while longer until he is recovered. They have been able to manage with some help with things like husking the corn but Varnum looks forward to when Edward can work again. Varnum tells Harriet about what they have been using the money she sent them for; he bought a book. He concludes by praising his daughter for her religious work.

My kind regard

My Dear Daughter
This is monday
and you can probably ima-
gine what is going on indoors
at the old homestead. Clara
with the assistance of Mary
is doing up our big washing, Mar-
tha and her mother are tak-
ing care of Edward and do-
ing housework. I have chopped
a little wood and got our
turnips into the cellar. I be-
lieve I have now got every
thing gathered in excepting the
cabages, and perhaps they will
be in the cllar before night.
It is just six weeks today
since Edward got hurt. He has
kept his bed all this time
with the exception of a short
time yesterday when we got
him into a chair. From present
appearances it will be a long
time before he will recover. He
is getting tired of lying in bed
though he has bourne it with much
patience. The Lord has given me
such a measure of health that
I have made out to manage our
affairs pretty well with some
hired help. We made a husking
bee week before last one after
noon and our kind neighbors
came and husked all our
corn nicely. We had not very
much, only about two acres.
I shall be glad when Edward
gets well enough to relieve
me of the cares which I now
have to bear. I must tell
you the use I have made
of part of the funds you
so generously sent me. The
order for five pounds when
cashed amounted to about
twenty four dollars. The gold
dollar you sent me as a birth
day present I invested in a
book the title of which is
"Nearing Home." The book is a
compilation in prose and poetry
by Dr Schenck Sec. of the Board
of Publication It cost a dollar
and sixty cts ($1.60) and that
the whole might be your gift
I appropriated [--fifty--] sixty cents from
proceeds of the order. It is a
nice book for aged people,
the poetry being much like
and some the very same as
is found in "Heaven in song."
I have also purchased with
the avails of the order cotton
cloth for shirts and wrappers
amounting to $1,27, a coat and
Vest $7,00, Pants 3,72, using $12,59 of
the order, a little more than one half.
The remainder about $11,40. I [?design?]
to lay out for your mother.
I purchased cloth for three shirts,
two wrapper, & [--one--] a suit of winter
clothes for twelve dollars, the
pants were not made up.
I think this is pretty cheap.
I suppose you have seen the
comet which was splendid two
or three weeks ago but is fast
fading away. The weather is grow-
ing cold. I dread the winter, and
so does my brother Augustus as his
daughter informs us. There is not
much interest here in the subject
of religion. O that the Lord would
revive his work among us, and
that like Simeon I might before
I die see the salvation of God
displayed in a glorious revival of
religion. May our kind Father give
you health and greatly bless your labours.
Affectionately your father
