Subject
Gifts; Shopping; Money
Description
In this short note that was once attached to a package, Harriet tells her mother about the shopping trip she and Henry went on where they bought a dress as a gift for Mattie. She would have liked to include more gifts for everyone, but does not have the funds. She hopes that her father's watch chain arrived in the US safely.

Canton Sept 5th '71-
My dear Mother,
I have often wanted to send
one of these pretty little boxes to some of the dear
ones at home and now it is just the thing
for an "envelope" for Mattie's dress, so you
will please accept the box with very much love
from your children in China. I so wish
we could send something for all but cannot
this time for "reasons to numerous to mention".
When we were over in the shops for the box this morning
I told Henry to hurry and get what we wanted
for I could not bear to see the many pretty
things and think how nice it would be to
send you as many of them as I would
like. But I know they will all take the
will for the deed and we can send just as
much love as we like and after all that is
the best of Earths treasures. I hope Father
received his watch chain all right the
mails dent seem to be quite reliable always
and it made the envelope rather
heavy. With much love for all from
Your aff daughter
Hattie.
