Description
In this letter to her older brother Edward, Harriet reflects that it has been five years since she's been home. They have two visitors currently, Miss Chase and Mr. Fitch. Mr. Fitch is very old to be travelling the world. His travel companions are Professors Seelye and Hitchcock from Amherst College and they are staying with Dr. Happer. Miss Chase reminds Harriet of Mattie. Mrs. McChesney is on the way home with directions if she wanted to stop in Guilford if she wanted. They hoped Mr. Condit would fill the space left but he is too old. Professor Seelye might have a recommendation.

My dear Edward,
Henry says he has
written a letter for you to-day but
it is so late I fear I shall not
write much of one to-night. I Expect
however you will accept the will for
the deed. It is [u]almost[/u] five years
now since I was with you I
Expect the years have changed us
both somewhat I wonder if we
shall meet and compare notes
when [u]four[/u] years more have passed.
Our family [u]my[/u] family [u]Henry's[/u]
family numbers four just now.
The members with whom you
are not acquainted are a young
lady Miss Chase from the Ladies
Mission is Calcutta who is now
visiting Canton and a venerable
gentleman Mr Fitch from
Auburn New York, who is on his
way around the world.
He is an elder in the Pres church
is 74 years old but as active and
strong as most men of fifty. his
hair is white as snow and has been
for forty yours. "They say" that
only one older man has as yet
been round the world.
He is travelling with Prof Seelye
and Prof Hitchcock of Amherst
college New Hampshire. I think
we wrote you by last mail that
we were then expecting a visit from
them soon. We then expected to
Entertain Prof Hitchcock but it
was finally arranged that the two
Profs should go to Dr Happers.
Still we see them often, both very
pleasant gentlemen Prof Seelye is a
D D. Prof Hitchcock an M D.
Prof Hitchcock is very off hand in
his manners Western style. Prof Seelye
more polished and preaches [u]Excellent[/u]
sermons they are a real treat.
As Dr Hitchcock said in Conference
when called upon to speak after
Prof Seelye had spoken,
the gentleman who had just spoken
was the thinking speaking member
of the party and all that he
and Mr Fitch did was to pat
him on the back and tell him
to go ahead," Dr Hitchcock is the
college doctor and has charge of
the gymnasium. He has
been drilling them in gymnastics
over at Dr Happers since he
has been here We would have
Enjoyed it Extremely if we could
have joined the class but it was
just at the time when we have
chinese prayErs. Tell Matt
that Miss Chase reminds us
very much of her in many respects.
She has been rather poorly
since she has veen in Canton
I am afraid she will not be
able to stay in India long.
Mrs McCesney left us by the
last steamer and I suppose
is now half way home.
We gave her directions to get
to Guilford and I hope that
you will see her there sometime
although I expect she will
hardly stop on the way home.
Her Fathers is not living her
mother is in New Jersey.
We hoped Mr Condit
might come back when he
heard of the vacancy made
in our mission but we hear
by the last mail that there
is no hope of it . his health
is so poor that it seems
doubtful whether he will be
able to return to his work
in California but he hopes
to get back there by the end of
the year. So I expect we
cannot hope for any reinforcements
until next year. Prof Seelye says
he is going to try to send some
one from Amherst that he would
like to get a line of connection
Established. I hope he will there
is room and work for all who
will come. But I [?am?] warned
