Harriet writes to thank her brother for sending them music, some of which Edward wrote. She thinks his pieces are especially wonderful. Her voice has gotten better since being in China, but she is out of practice on the piano. She hopes they will be able to sing together again soon. She says goodnight but asks him to send more music.

My dear Edward
I must write a few
lines to tell you how [u]delighted[/u] we
were to receive by the last mail a
copy of the Anthem [?Choir?] and
to find among its anthems
those which you had contributed.
They are all [u]Excellent[/u] we think.
and Especially the one "By the rivers
of Babylon." The strain at the
top of the 72[u]nd[/u] page is [u]Exquisite[/u]
the words + music are so perfectly
adapted to Each other. the light
flippant [?taunting?] way in which
the first comes in "Sing us one of the
songs of Zion." and there the sad
plaintive reply "How shall we sing
the Lord's song in a strange land,"
seems to me as [u]perfectly beautiful[/u]
as anything I [u]ever[/u] heard.
Henry says that he had always thought
of a strain in "the Creation" that
seemed to him very fine "When in
the fullness of his time +c" and one
in Denmark "When rolling years +c"
and now this one seems to him perfect
like those. So you see he ranks you
as one of the [u]first three[/u]
You may be sure we are proud to
find [u]our Edward's[/u] name among
"twenty two of our ablest and
most Experienced anthem writers."
I hope sometime before many
years have passed we
may have the pleasure of
singing some of your music
together. I am dreadfully out
of practice in playing I find
in trying some of these new
anthems that I cannot play
at all hardly, I think that
I have improved in singing
some since I left home, although
I havnt much of a voice but I
expect if I should try to sing
with the rest of you I would
find that I was a long ways
behind. Well I must say goodnight.
