Description
Harriet explains to Sarah how Mattie and Lucy are also writing letters, and that the last batch they sent home was delayed because the Colorado (mail steamer) needed repairs. She mentions how she can't wait to see the family again and is glad to know she, Henry, and Martha are thought of often. Offering compliments to all of her sisters on how they've grown up, Harriet expresses her wish for Clara and Mary to go to Wooster, as well as Emily to do well there. She says that she and Henry, with the help of the mission, will send money for her to attend and also to pay for her family to buy land in Wooster and build a house (since the people in Seville are unpleasant). She concludes by enquiring after Frank's poor health.

My dear Sarah,
I have just come
in from Chinese prayer meeting
and find Mattie and Lucy
busily Engaged in writing letters
for the mail that is to leave
to-morrow morning. Mattie I
presume will have told you that our
letters sent some days since to
Hongkong have been detained
there on account of the Colorado
being in need of repairs.
This letter I suppose will
find you all at home that is
those who are left when you
take "three from Eleven". Some
one I think perhaps it was
Clara wrote to us some time
since that in counting the
number of plates needed to set
the table you always commence
"two from Eleven leaves nine" It
seemed so very pleasant to me
to think of your doing so.
You know "Tis sweet to be remembered
Wherever we may be".
Sometimes when Mattie talks
about you all I feel as though
I can hardly wait until '76
to see you again. I can
hardly appreciate that you are
all "so much grown up" as Artemus
Ward Especially Clara and Mary.
Our curiosity is quite excited by the
accounts we hear of your commanding
presence and fine looks in general,
and of course we are all proud of
our Em's learning and Clara's
goodness and Mary's "petite beauty."
Henry had a letter from
Dr Taylor by last mail
and he seems to think Em is
"A N one" as they say of first
class ships. He says Dr
Gregory says she has as fine
a mind as any one under
his care . You may be sure
this pleases me for I should be
anxious the [u]girls[/u] should compare
favorably with the [u]boys[/u] in Wooster
and so when our Em comes
out so well I am [u]delighted[/u].
I hope Clara and Mary
will be able to go next year.
You must not let Clara think
for a [u]single moment[/u] of giving
up going to school on account
of losing her money. It will
seem very hard indeed if she
does lose it all I think money
Earned by teaching is too hardly
Earned to share such a fate.
But however that may be tell
her she must let her Chinese friends
help her through with her studies.
We all feel that we would rather
invest our "Benevolent Fund" in
that way than any other and
it is money that we would
not use for ourselves any way.
Mattie is writing to Clara about
it. When Henry goes to Hongkong
on his way to Synod about two
weeks hence he will send from
there $ 200.00 and if Clara
and Mary will make use of it
we shall be very glad indeed
and next year we can send
them as much more. If they
know how much pleasure it will
give us to feel that we are helping
them some I am sure they will
be willing to accept it. I hope
we shall hear by the mail due
in a few days how much is
still owing on "our land" in
Wooster so that we can send that
too. We wonder if it it would not
be a good arrangement to build a
house on it sometime for the
Noyes family. It seems as though
[u]Seville[/u] has had their presence
about as long as it deserves. J M Reid
in writing of the Sevillians once spoke
of them as a "generation of
ungrateful vipers." I would write
to Clara but it is getting late and
I suppose I should only rewrite what
Mattie is writing. [--It--] Mattie has talked
some about Clara's making a special
study of music but it seems to me if
she does want to do that eventually
it would be best for her to go to Wooster
two years or so first. We all want [--to--]
her to do what [u]she[/u] wishes and

you must'nt let her feel uncomfortably about the funds Father's letter
spoke of Frank's health as being very poor and we feel very
anxious to hear
