Canton China
Aug 30th 1875
My dear Em -
It seems a long
time since we have had
letters from America but we
hear to-night that the
"Great Republic" has already
left Yokohama and is on
her way down here so we
may hope for letters in
a few days. I hope you
will find time to write to
us if it is only a little
Every two weeks for steamers
are running now so that
we will be pretty sure to
get them regularly ---
I have been down this eve
to Mr Prestons to help them

with some music for Social
evening. They are to meet
here. It is hardly our
turn but we do not mind
doing a little more than
our share . WE have
been having very hot weather
nearly all this month the
thermometer has stood at
96° or nearly up to that,
but this will not give you
an idea of how hot it has
been . Our school is now
going on nicely the dear
girls are all so happy
in being back with us
again. WE find the new
school-house is much
cooler and more airy than
the former one and
the changes we made
in the arrangement
of the rooms proves to
be a very great
improvement. We can

keep the Girls school and
the Women's school quite
separate and find it so
much better than before.
WE have found a
nice trusty woman to
look after the girls our
of school-hours and
this will relieve me
very much. Then too
I have changed the
hours for morning prayers
and so do not go out
to the school until after
breakfast and this makes
it much Easier. I am
trying to plan now to
make the work as
easy as possible for my
successors. To-morrow
is the last day of August
then only four months
more of 1875. Henry
has been this eve
looking over maps and

and different lines of
travel I dreamed
night before last of getting
home but it was not as
nice as I know the reality
will be . I thought every
thing about the home
looked so unnatural
that it did not seem
like the "old house at home"
I know these months
will pass very quickly I
shall be so very busy
a whole month has
gone already since
we came back from
the country and it
only seems like a
few days. I wanted
to write a letter to "my
church" to-night but it
is too late to think
of anything but following
my associates to the
land of Nod. With much

[Note: Letter concludes vertically on page four]
love for all Ever your aff sister Hattie -

Hattie
