Title

Letter from Hattie to Sarah, September 14, 1875

Subject

Moon worship; Missionaries; Girls' schools

Description

Harriet explains that today Chinese people are celebrating their annual worship to the moon, so they are going to have a feast. Mrs. Ellinwood visited several mission stations and she thinks that the one in Canton is the nicest but it is also really noisy. Harriet confesses that last night she dreamt of being at home in the United States. She tells Sarah that everything is going well in the schools. Miss Galbraith, a new missionary who is coming from the United States, might arrive tomorrow by the Belgiac.

Canton China
Sept 14th 1875
My dear Sarah,
I thought I had
only time to write a letter
to Frank before break-fast
but I have finished his
and as there are still a
few minutes left I will have
a word with you. This
is one of the Chinese feast
days a great day with them
to-night they have their annual
worship of the moon . Last night
there seemed to be an
incessant firing of crackers
and this morning they
are "reporting" on every side.
In a letter received by last
mail from Mrs Ellinwood
she says that of all the
mission stations they visited
in their long journey in

many respects they thought
Canton the most pleasant
but that it was by far
the "noisiest". We received
your letters written July 17th
by the last mail. They
were written at home but I
suppose this will find you
back in Columbus.
I am anticipating a nice
time visiting there sometime
soon. I have many
pleasant recollections of the
week I spent there although
it was such a nice time of
sadness. It must seem
quite like home to you -
you have spent so many
years there . I am sure
you are doing a good work
there I think we may
count you in among the
missionary workers that
the Noyes family has finished

I hope you succeeded in
getting the horse-back ride you
and Clara were planning
I have not forgotten our "John
Gilpin ride" although it does
sometimes seem to me as
though I had forgotten
every thing that happened
on the other side of the
world. but I am in hopes
my failing memory will revive
if I am so happy as to revisit
"the old familiar scenes "--
I dreamed again last night
of being at home. I can
hardly believe that such a
pleasure is really in store
for me. The time seems
to fly now as never before there
are so many things we
want to get done before
the end of the year.
The schools have gone
on so nicely this term

as yet there has been a
ripple and the term is
nearly one fourth gone .
I am so glad the work
is going to be in such
nice order for Mattie
and Lucy. We are
expecting a new lady
missionary in Canton she
will perhaps reach here
to-morrow we expect she
will come from America
by the Belgiac due in
Hong kong tomorrow. She
comes to join Mr Nevin's
mission and will live
with them . Her name is
Miss Galbraith she is an
Eastern lady from N Hampshire
or Vermont. we hear ----
Now my sheet is nearly full
I know I have not written
much but I will make
it up in talking next year.

[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
The Girls teacher has just been in to ask me what I
would like to have her make to give me before I
go home
She Embroiders
most beautifully
I wish you
could see
her - she is
quite a
lady in
her way.
as is also
the teacher
of the Women.
Ever yours aff
Hattie.
Much love for
Aunt Fay and
Cousins one + all.

Sarah

Noyes

Galbraith

Hattie
Fay
