Letter from Hattie to Mattie, January 17, 1876

Travel; Ships; Sabbath;

Harriet is writing another letter to Martha while on the S. S. Madagascar. She wanted to tell Mattie about the wonderful Sabbath the day before and how she wishes Mattie could be there. Their vacation is starting to come to a close, the voyage has been good so far but the wind has picked up. She is looking forward to being back in Canton. The captain is sociable and is one of the only people who speaks English.

Jany 17th 1876
My dear Mattie -
I will not put my pen
away without writing a few lines
to tell you what a delightful Sabbath
we had yesterday. Everything was
so quiet and peaceful it seemed
a [u]perfect[/u] Sabbath just such a
day as we had wished it might
be many times during the week.
I thought of you very often during
the day, of how you would Enjoy
being with us and how I knew
you would enjoy seeing us have
such a quiet happy time .
I felt that it was [u]the[/u] day of
this part of our voyage that we
shall remember best.
We sat on deck all through
the day and until after ten-
o-clock in the evening and
then I felt that I did not

like to have the day numbered
with the past --- To-day we
have had a great sea but more
wind than yesterday . The week
has seemed a short one I told
Henry this morning it seemed as
though I could feel the end of our
vacation drawing near. But I
know we shall be very glad to get
back to Canton when the time comes,
and for your sake I am glad
to count the weeks off.
Captain [?Timm?] is quite sociable, he is
the only one on board who speaks much
English, and we do not see much of him
except at table. I do all my Eating at
breakfast + dinner - breakfast at nine +
dinner at two. The two meals come
rather too near together to suit Exactly
but do very well. They have supper
at seven when I always stay on
deck and visit myself --
And now again good-bye --

我们的假期末尾把一年拖了很久。
但是我很高兴
我们可以这个时候回广州，
而且看在你的份上

我很高兴你把这周算过去了。
「Timm」船长很友好，
他是唯一一个在船上说英语很多的人，
我们除了吃饭的时候，
不常见到他。
我早上9点吃早饭，下午2点吃晚饭。
两顿饭靠得太近了，
以至于没有很好的配合，
但是还很好。
他们晚上7点吃晚饭
那个时候我经常坐在甲板上审视我自己——
现在，我需要说再见了——
