"Joppa" -
March 20th 1876.
My dear Mother -
You will see by this
date that we are now in Palestine.
We hoped to receive letters from
home when we reached Port Said
that would help us decide about
coming here but as we did not
find any awaiting us there we
finally concluded to come and
I hope we shall not regret it.
We are going directly to Beirut
and hope to get letters there .
It seems so long to be on the
way and no words can tell
how I long to be at home but we
know that we shall never be likely
to have another opportunity of visiting
Palestine . We are spending
to-day lying at anchor in the
harbor of Joppa or Jaffa as
it is now called - and I am
improving the opportunity to write
some letters from this place
which has so many Biblical
associations . It is certainly a
very old city for it is mentioned
in the Bible when the division
of the land of Canaan among
the Israelites is recorded and
tradition marks it as the
place where Noah built the
ark. WE came into the
harbor this morning just as the
sun was rising and the whole
picture as we saw it from the
steamer was beautiful. The
harbor which often times is so
rough that it is impossible to
land here is to-day as smooth as
a mirror and the sky above us
is beautifully clear and bright.
There is a sandy beach
stretching back from the sea
and at a little distance
rising into hills and far beyond
there enveloped in the blue haze
that distance gives we can see
the mountain range which
extends through Palestine.
A mountain far away to the
North is pointed out to us as Mt
Carmel. The city of Joppa
is not large and is built on the
side of a hill which rises from
the water's Edge. We have not been
on shore yet as we are told there
is little of interest here and we expect
to visit here when we come back from
Beirut I think that a house is
still shown here said to be that
of "Simon the Tanner" but whether
it really is or not we know that
it was here in a house similar to
if not one of these where he received
the messengers sent by Cornelius
and it was just such a flat
house-top as these we see to-day
where he went up to pray. As
I sat on deck this morning I thought
how often doubtless Peter had looked
out over the blue waters of the
MeditErranean - looking to him
then just as we see it now
for whatever changes come
on land the sea the emblem
of change stil remains through
so many centuries unchangeably
the same. We expect to go on
from here this evening and all
being well will reach Beirut
[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
tomorrow
morning. And
now good-bye
We will write
again after
reaching
Beirut
With much love
for all from
Your aff daughter
