Harriet writes to her sister, Sarah, a description of some of the people they have met along their trip and their reasons for traveling. One pair is an old and young man who are opposites in almost every way but they get along very well. She has liked everyone they met so far.

Jerusalem -
[--March--] 12th 1876.
My own dear Sara -
I have not sent you a line
from Palestine and our time here
is now nearly past. We have
enjoyed our trip very much were
very fortunate in many respects.
We were favored in having pleasant
travelling companions whom we met

at our first camping ground at
Sidon and we came together all
the way down to Jerusalem They
were two gentleman, bachelors, one
an "old man and the other a
little boy" - ask Em if she still
remembers how I used to repeat the
age of my [u]army[/u] friends "This time
I speaker true" as the Chinese would
say in pigeon English -- One

of the gentleman Mr Le-Merchant
was an Englishman sixty-five
years old, the other an American
about twenty I should judge
Mr Atterbury from New York --
Mr Atterbury said that Mr Le Merchant
could pass as the father of the
company and he would be the
[u]infant[/u]. We liked them both
very much and it added much
to the pleasure of our trip having
them with us. They were strangers
to Each other until they met in
Beirut and arranged to make
the trip together. They seemed
rather an odd pair such a
contrast in Every way but got on
admirably together. When we
reached here we found a party
of five American gentleman who
had been here several days and
were nearly ready to set out on
their tour [u]northward[/u] through the Holy Land.

Four of them Messrs Jones Bridgman Monroe
+ Hudson are ministers [--the fifth--] a Mr
Brown from New York was the fifth.
They expect to spend a month on
the trip and will have a grand
time I am sure. Henry and Mr
Jones seemed to take a great fancy
to Each other. He is very tall and
a [u]large[/u] man mentally as well as
physically it was Easy to see - is
from Virginia and goes against [u]Union[/u]
in Every way and shape --
We met a number of parties of
tourists on our way down "They
say" there are not as many
Americans as usuals on account
of the centennial this year.
I hope all will have as pleasant
a time as we did -- And now
I must say good-bye and
leave the rest to talk over
when we get [u]home[/u]. Ever
