Jerusalem -
April 12th 1876.
My own dear Em -
I am spending a
part of our last day in Jerusalem in
writing letters and one shall be for
you. Our trip in Palestine is now in
the past and to morrow morning we
leave Jerusalem. We shall have one
more long horseback ride from Jerusalem
down to Joppa some call it forty
miles. We hope to get started very Early

in the morning - so as to have a long
rest in the middle of the day. I have
enjoyed the days spent in the Holy Land
so much. and but for my impatience
to get home would have wished the time
here might have been longer. Now that
this trip is over I long for the days that
still intervene to pass, they cannot go
too quickly. I will not attempt to
give you a description of our trip for
I hope when you receive this we
shall be nearly home. I hope we

shall not be obliged to stop anywhere
excepting I suppose we must spend a
few days in London as Bella wishes to
stop there. We have given up the idea
of stopping to visit any friends in
England. It is already three months
since we left Canton and the time
seems so long to be on the way-
We have been in Jerusalem since last
Friday to-day is Wednesday - and
have visited the places of interest.
There is much that is sad, intensely
sad to the Christian traveller here.
The Jerusalem of to-day is in such
sad contrast with Jerusalem as it
was when Christ wept over the
desolation so soon to come upon it.
Looking upon it as it is now from
the Mt of Olives the city presents a
beautiful appearance it is indeed
"beautiful for situation" and to
see it now enables one to imagine
something of what it must
have been in the days of its
prosperity. Yesterday morning
Henry and I rose very Early and
went "over the Mt of Olives to Bethany"
and came back in time for

breakfast. We thought how much
Father would enjoy the privilege
of visiting these places. Henry +
I have been out to the Mt of
Olives every day since we came and
I hope we can go once more this
afternoon. I am sure I shall
never cease to be thankful for having
had the privilege of visiting these
places . We were so fortunate in
having pleasant weather every day until
the last. and it was just the
right season of the year to see
the country in its most beautiful
state. I wish I could remember
perfectly every moment of the time
I could not get much time for
journalizing but I think I can
remember and write down when I
have leisure some accounts of our
trip - and I will not need to give
you a written account for so soon
[Note: some kind of stain over the next two lines]
we shall see each other face to
face. I can [?not?] realize that it
will be so. We go from Joppa to
Alexandria and may be obliged to
wait there for a little but I hope not.
And now Adieu Ever your aff Hattie.
