Subject

School buildings; Missionaries; Telegraph cables

Description

Harriet is excited to have a letter from Edward. She wonders if the telegram has reached him concerning the dedicaiton of the school building. She mentions Cyrus Field's visit and going on to talk about the new missionaries, Mr. Fulton and how he and Mary Happer might end up in a relationship. She says that Mr. and Mrs. White seem rather conceited. They are in their late twenties and came from New York. He is interested in taking charge of the music department.

Canton -
Jany 11th 1881
My dear Edward -
I really and
truly have a letter from you
to answer this time I was
glad to find a letter from
you in the last mail from
home you know we do not
get letters from you very
often and "as regards the
reason why" I know you
are not very fond of writing
letters. We are astounded at
the cold weather you were
having in November. I wonder
what kind of a time you
had in December. Mrs Kerr
writes that it was very cold
in Canonsburg. You wrote
just before Thanksgiving
we are waiting with some
interest to hear whether

Mr [?Stoddard?] reached
America in time to send
you the telegram about
the dedication of the
school building. I do not
think we have written to
you since we had a
visit from Cyrus Field + his
wife-- They came up to
Canton for a couple of days
and staid at Mr Cunningham s
We hoped to see them
but hardly expected to
but received word that they
were coming to see the
school. At this juncture
remember that I have
already written of their visit
so I will change the
subject and speak of
our new missionaries Mr
Fulton lives with Dr Kerr
and is very nice and
friendly and brotherly and

we look for him to make
a good missionary. Of course
before he came he was given
away by the community in
anticipating to Mary Happer.
At first he did not seem to
take any particular fancy to
her and it seemed as though
she did not quite enjoy that
and made some effort to
attract him and we judge
that she is succeeding. I do
not know whether she will
ever want to marry him
or not in case that should
be his wish - time will show -
Mr + Mrs White seem rather
conceited people and Evidently
expect to show the "old fossils"
out here a better way --
They will doubtless live and
learn as Dr Loomis once
said of some others they
have a good deal of experience
before them. They are

not young he is I believe
twenty-eight and she is "twenty nine
years six months + two days" -
and comes from the city of
New York. She seems kind and
pleasant and says she
wants to learn the language
so that she will not have to
depend on English speaking
servants He considers himself
quite a musician - and
Evidently expect to take charge
of the musical department.
I think however I shall
continue to select the times
on Sabbath evening. If he
could play I do not know but he
would propose my resigning in
his favor. As it is he takes his
seat next the instrument
and sings [?air?] He enjoys
singing very much. I hope
we shall like them but I do
not expect we shall see another
new missionary equal to Mr Henry
again very soon --

[Note: Letter concludes on page one vertically]
I hope your
SS Concert
proved
a success
I suppose
it is over
before this
Ever you
loving sister
Hattie
