My dear Em ---
I am writing
hastily tonight it seems
as though I have almost
given up writing letters I do
have so little time. I have
been making out my yearly
account to-day. I drew from
the Mission and expended
$2400.00 besides the
$3000.00 for the building
Mrs Happer was down for
a few minutes this morning
It does one so much
good to see her she is one
of the "excellent of the earth"
as Mother used to say.
We had our home
mail a few days since
the letters written late in
November. I expect you
and Sarah are too busy
to write but there is always
some one in the dear old
home on the hill to write to
us. Our home letter did
not come with the rest of
the mail but we found
it has been taken to
Henry's We were glad to
see Cousin Mary's letter I
wish I could get time
to write to her. I am
very glad that Sarah
finds it enjoyable "more
or less" in Columbus
without them. How
is your institution coming
on? I was so sorry
to hear that Scott has
been afflicted with the
epizootic I do hope he
will get over it all right.
I look forward a few
years and hope to
have some nice drives
with our young horses.
When I came out it
seemed as though
five years would not
be very long and I
hope I may go home
in five years more.
Dr Mitchell says the time
flies after one is thirty
he is sixty five a dear
fatherly old gentleman.
M said it seemed
almost as if Father were
here to have him in
the home. How nice
it would be if it were
possible for you all
to come out and
visit us here I am
sure you would think we
have a pleasant place
to live. Cyrus Field & his
wife seemed to feel pleased
that we had such a
nice home and nice work.
Sometimes it seems a
little as though people
thought we had too nice a
place but they did not
seem to feel so at all.
They are members of
Dr Adams church in
New York. We liked
Mr Wynkoop exceedingly
he seemed such a
nice man he is very slender
and made me think a little
of Frank. He is a fine
singer and quite good looking
and seems to be all soul.
I heard a great deal of him
when I was at home and
he seemed to be loved by all who knew him.
[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
I am
afraid
I shall
never
take any
pleasure
in writing
on this
paper or
you in
reading
our letters.
With much love
Hattie

Cyrus Field
