Harriet writes to her sister Emily about Mattie and her cold. She has been sick since December and can't get rid of it. She talks about some of the gifts she's received for her birthday, Mattie gave her a laquered box and Mrs. Parkes sent some crochet. She goes into talking about the presidential election, she hopes Mrs. Garfield will continue with Mrs. Hayes' policy on the temperance question. The school has just opened and they currently have twenty nine scholars. The mission applied for two single ladies to come in the fall as well as a physician to start work in the next province.

My dear Em-
I must tell you
that I dreamed of being
with you last night thought
we were sleeping together in
the bedroom out of the sitting
room. I wonder how you
have all got through the
winter I hope well. Mattie
has been quite shut in since
the 1st of Jan with a cold
she took in December and
cannot get rid of. I hope
we shall soon have pleasant
weather that I imagine would
do her more good than anything
else. This is my birthday Mattie
gave me a beautiful lacquered
box very much like the one
we sent you by Mrs Kerr and
a long [illegible] [illegible]. Mrs
Parkes sent me a very pretty
tidy crocheted of different kinds
of wool or zephyr- and [u]Bella[/u]
a birthday card. It does not
seem long since my last birthday
the years pass so quickly this
one makes me thirty seven--
How soon I shall be [u]forty[/u]
if I live- Yesterday we
thought about our new President
I think Ohio may well be
[?proud?] of the Presidents, she
has furnished I hope Mrs
Garfield will carry out Mrs
Hayes' [u]policy[/u] on the temperance
question. How nice it is that
she did as she did. I wonder
if Mattie has told you
about the school. We have
just opened the weather
is so bad the scholars are
slow about coming in
we have twenty nine. We
do not mind as we want to
save a little to get a
little more furniture.
We think we have a
very nice set of scholars so
far. Tomorrow is our
Communion I do not know how
many will unite with the
church. I meant to write
to Sarah this time planned
to spend last evening writing
but Mr Fulton came in
with Mr [?Don?] so that was
the way the evening went.
Mr + Mrs White have
rented a home and
are going to housekeeping
soon. We are somewhat
relieved we have felt
a little afraid they might
want to come in here
and we want so much
that this shall be a
"home for the single" and
now it is settled to be so
I am sure. The
mission has applied
for two single ladies to
be sent out next autumn.
They have also asked
for two missionaries and
a physician to go and
commence work in
the next province. I
hope they will all be
sent- If Mattie goes
home soon she will give
you all the details of
everything which we
cannot write You will
find that she will talk
more than I did I
imagine. Now I must
say good bye for it is
time to send the letters
off. With ever so much
love for you all----
