Title
Unsigned letter from Harriet to Mattie, July 27, 1881
Subject
Prayer meetings; Marriage; Death;
Description
Hattie is writing to her sister, Martha, before the evening's prayer meeting, mostly about another member of their church who is "a very earnest Christian". This person is apparently very effective in her work, limited only by her husband wanting her to move to San Ui, and potentially not giving her permission to pursue medicine. Harriet then discusses the three workers who have passed away recently, the most recent being Sz Tai who's last days and funeral Harriet attended.

My dear Mattie
The prayer meeting
is to be here this evening and
as there is still a little while
before it will be time for the
"meeting to arrive" I will spend
it in writing to you. It has
been rather warm to-day.
It is almost three months
more since you went away-
I am waiting very impatiently
for the next mail to tell about
you getting home. [?A-ei?] was
in this morning she said she
dreamed last night you
had come back well and
strong. She is very nice and
seems a very earnest Christian
She is not coming back after
vacation. Her husband
has gone to San Ui and
opened a medicine shop.
He wanted her to go some
time since but because she
wished it allowed her to
stay through the term. I think
she has done very well
indeed. She has not been
in school much more then
a year and has read
the Testament through thoroughly
and explained through Acts
has got a very good and
intelligent education and
what is infinitely better I
believe she has allowed that
knowledge which has made
her [illegible] unto salvation . She
has of her own accord been
giving into the hospital lately-
said she felt she could only
be here a little while and
she wanted to do someting.
She talks most fluently and
earnestly. I hope she will
do good in San Ui. She would
like ot come back and study
medicine but I have no
idea her husband will be
willing. I wish she were free
from him I think she would
make an excellent worker.
Sz Tai died day before yesterday
there was a funeral service
at Dr Happer's chapel at 4-
o-clock in the afternoon and
then she was buried in our cemetery
early the next morning. Her
daughter was at the funeral
she looks so much like her I
wish she could come to school.
she is a widow with one child a
little boy. Sztai suffered a
good deal the last few days.
She realized fully that she
was near death and was
very anxious to go. Did I
tell you that they gave her
a room in the school-building
at Dr Happer's and she had
a woman to take care of her
so was just as comfortable
as she could be. I had a nice
visit with her one evening about
two weeks ago the last time I saw
her. She talked all over her coming
to the school - + her work afterwards
said she had wanted so much
to get well and do a few
more years of work but now
she only wanted to go home to
heaven soon said she would
remember us all there and
wait for us to come. She is
the third of the workers from
our school who have taken home.
Lai Ying of the Baptist Mission
Ho-Nai-nai and Sz-tai all
earnest Christians and
faithful workers. Then you
remember the woman who died
[Note: The following is written vertically on first page]
in the hospital and [?ATsap?] I do not know of any
others from
the school
who have
died during
the past nine
years. It
seems a very
small number
of so many
scholars.

Sz Tai
Sz tai
