Title
Letter from Hattie to Father, July 28, 1882
Subject
Missionaries; Health; Missions, Medical
Description
Harriet writes to her father about the other missionaries they know, discussing E. M. Butler and the various things they have heard about her character. Harriet also mentions that Mrs. Kerr is not doing well, health-wise, and has been doing poorly since the last winter. Harriet spends the latter half of the letter discussing a new Doctor in the area Dr. Stubbart as well as the success of a Dr. Dean, and a young doctor Sturge who is in Petchaburi.

July 28th 1881.
My dear Father --
The last mail
brought me a letter from
the Lady who is coming
out to live with me. I thought
of sending the letter home
for Mattie and the rest
of you to see but as she
said she intended writing
to you I presume you
have heard from her
directly before this. Her
name is E M Butler. I
wonder if her first name
is Emily I have guessed
that it is Elizabeth it seems
as though that is what it is.
She writes very nicely and
Miss Cook of Caldwell writes
that she is good and nice
and I have no doubt she
will be. Mrs Perkins wrote
to Mrs Happer that she
is no common person. She
comes from Newark NJ.
If you have not heard
from her, her address I will
give you 174 Walnut St
Newark NJ. Mattie will
doubtless see her and I hope
you all may. I saw Henry
to-day for a little while
it is nice that he has a
chapel in this direction.
It has been quite warm
for a few days. Tell
Mattie Mrs Happer and
Mary have gone down to
Hong Kong for a few days.
Mrs Kerr does not seem
well at all says she is in
constant pain has never
been free from it since
last winter. Dr Kerr
seems better than she
did. I wrote to you I
think that we have the
prospect of another Dr
for the country Dr Stubbart
Mr Fulton says he wont go to
the country if his sister comes.
I hope if she does come that
they can keep home together.
From experience and observations
I have concluded that that
is the perfection of missionary
life. I shall be interested
to know what Mattie's opinion
of her as a prospective missionary
is. Sophie Preston still seems
to keep in mind the hope
of coming back sometime
I had letters to-night from
Bangkok such a nice
one from dear Dr Dean.
His wife had gone home
and he is living all alone
He hopes she will come
back in a year. One
of his assistants baptized
fifty converts in one week
recently. It seems strange
that his Board will not
send someone there to help
him. His work is all that is being
done for the Chinese in Bangkok
and half the population is Chinese
250,000 I think. Our Mission
is wholly for the Siamese. Their
young Doctor in Petchaburi was
coming up about this time to meet his
bride who is coming from Philada [Philadelphia]
He is Dr Sturge her name is Mrs
Turner she is a young widow. The
cholera is so bad down in Siam now
he does not feel that he ought to leave
so she will come to Canton + wait for
him if so she will probably stay
with me ---They think a great
deal of him down there. I hope
if Dr Stubbart comes here he
will be another good one.
They do not find a lady doctor
yet for us but perhaps thry
will after a while.
With much love Yr aff daughter
Hattie.
