Harriet thanks Emily for some drawings she sent, before listing updates on their friends, particularly Mrs. Kerr who is still in poor health. Harriet is also sorry that Ms. Kerr has not gotten the chance to make any clothing, noting that Dr. Kerr is rather shabbily dressed.

Canton China
Aug 29th 1881
My dear Em
I am very grateful
to you for taking time to draw
all those pictures of the decorating
of the church. They have given
us a very good idea. I would
so much have liked to see
it I wish they could have
taken some views. I think
you must have felt repaid
for your work. It seems
as though the decorations
were perfect in design.
We were especially pleased
with the beautiful tribute to
Father and grateful for
your remembrance of the
China missionaries. It was
so nice that Mattie got home
in time I wish it had been
possible for us to have been
there too. I had a chance

to show your letter +c to
Henry last Thursday. I
think that was very nice at
the back of the church under
the [?gallery?] "Peace be within
thy walls"- indeed I do not
see how anything could have
been improved. Mrs Kerr
was very much interested
in hearing about it. Poor
woman she is quite ill now
and has been for several
days with fever but is somewhat
better to-day. I think that
both she and Dr Kerr are
so worried about Josie. They
both seem to be growing old
so fast. They have not heard
a word from him for three
mails. Poor little Hattie has
rather a hard time her
mother I think is very
[?exacting?] and makes her
wait on her a great deal
and then worries the poor

child by making her think she
isnt going to live but a little
while. It seems too bad to
worry Hattie so when I dont
suppose there is any danger of
her not getting along as she only
has malarial fever. Tell Martha
she has AYau one of the medical
students to take care of her.
She really does look poorly
and has not seemed at all
well since she came back
complains of pain all the
time- She always wants to
have her love sent to you
all. She so often speaks about
Mrs Henrys mother + sisters. I
am sorry when they were so kind
to her for so long that they did
not keep it up a little longer
she seems quite humbled about it.
I hear the other side and know
exactly how they did feel so I
havnt much material to manufacture
any comfort for her - when she

talks to me about it. This
morning when I went over she had
on a flannel jacket of Dr Kerr's.
I am sorry for her she says she
has been intending to make some
clothing. I cut out a sacque for
her the other day but I suppose she
has not got it made. Mr Fulton was
talking the other day about how shabbily
Dr Kerr dressed last winter - said he
wanted to give him a suit of clothes. I
often noticed it but I suppose he felt that
he must save in every way for he paid
Mrs Kerr's and Hattie's expenses home
and back again. Mr Fulton
is neat in his appearance but
he is not by any means a "pretty"
man. He is going to live with
Mr Pearce on Shamin. Tell
Mattie Mr Eichler expects to
be married after a while and
live in the other side of that
house when Mr [?Edge?] was
formerly. Well it is not very
late but I am rather tired
so I think I will say
good-night and see if I
cannot get up early in the
morning write some more
Your loving Hattie --
