Harriet announces that thanks to an appeal from the Ningbo mission, their salary will now be paid in gold which signifies a 10 percent raise. Mrs. White has dyspepsia so she and Mr. White might not stay long. The English consul refused to give Mr. Selby a passport so he might have to go home soon. Harriet thinks that Mr. Selby should marry Miss Houston.

My dear Sarah -
I intended to
get up early enough
this morning to write some
more for the mail but I
have only a little time
as we are having breakfast
earlier than usual because
Miss Johnston is going
down to HongKong to-day.
The home mail came
day before yesterday the
letters written May 17th
Henry is not back from
the country yet When I
get an opportunity I
will give him the letters
from Clara and Mary.
There was a very short
Mission letter to the effect

that the Ningpo mission
had asked that their
salary might be paid
in gold and they had
agreed to do so not only
for them but for all
the missionaries in China
so it will make a difference
in our salaries of nearly
10 per cent, which will
be very nice for us. I
did not hear anything
about a lady yet had
no letter from Mrs Perkins
Mr Fulton hears that Dr
Ellinwood has written to
his sisters pastor that they
will be only too glad to
appoint her is she will
come. I hope she is a
little different from him
he is good and kind

but [u]talks[/u] so much. I think
Mrs Kerr is getting very tired
of him if his sister could
come out and keep house
for him it would be very
nice I do not believe he
will be very likely to get a
wife. I think Mr and
Mrs White are going to do
pretty well if they keep their
health she is much troubled
with dyspepsia and I
would not be much surprised
if they could not stay long.
Tell Mattie I had a
letter from Miss Houston
Mrs Carrow's friend She
is quite well now is living
in New York City. Her
address there is Bessie L Houston

If Mattie should be in
New York she would be

glad to see her I know.
The English Consul has
refused to give Mr Selby
a passport so I should
not be surprise if he
would go home soon.
If he could go by way
of America and marry
Miss Houston I think it
would be nice if they would
be happy together. I hope
I can write more for the
next mail which goes in
12 days. I do hope you
will stay at home this
year. You would doubtless
be able to get a situation
again after a while if
you wished. I am
sure anyone who has such
a good reputation as a
teacher ought to be able
to get a place without
difficulty With love for all
