Letter from Hattie to Sarah, June 27, 1881

Title
Letter from Hattie to Sarah, June 27, 1881
Subject
Travel; Customs duties; Death; Mental illness
Description
Harriet writes that it is unlikely for all Noyes girls to be together in Canton, but they will all be together sometime somewhere else. She asks Sarah to tell Mattie that Mrs. Carrow will travel on the next steamer and will take Mrs. Porter's baby with her. Mr. Porter died in Penang on his way home. Harriet thought that Mr. Porter "would get over his insanity" when he reached home, but death was still good for him. Mrs. Carrow had to pay high customs duty on an oil painting she sent home.

Canton China
June 27th 1881.
My dear Sarah -
I think it is
now time that I may
think of you as at home
resting after your year's
work. I hope you
are not all tired out and
that you five girls will
have a very nice time
at home together this
summer. You will
think sometimes I know
of the one in China
who would be glad to
come and make
number six if she
were not so far away
and otherwise employed
We cannot know whether
we will ever all be together
here indeed it does not
seem probable but we
do know that we will all
be together sometime and
not one will be missing
then, and there "the
wicked cease from troubling
and the weary are at rest."
It is a blessed glorious
prospect to have in view.
I hope you will find
time to write to use while
you are at home. I am
afraid you will forget
one. No that is not true
I am not afraid of
that I know that such
love as we all have for
each other can live and
thrive without letters or
anything else to nourish
it but its own [?strong?]
vitality. Yet nevertheless
I like to get letters by way
of remembrance ----
I am glad dear
Cousins Gilbert and
Mary are so happy in
their new home. I
would have thought it
would just suit Aunt Fay
to live quietly, but she
doubtless feels among
strangers and at her
age it is hard to make
new acquaintances I
suppose. Tell Mattie
Mrs Carrow goes on this steamer
She takes Mrs Porter's baby it is
such a nice child. Mr Porter
died at Penang on the way
home was it not so sad. His
Father though so much of him
his own Mother was not living. We
hoped so much that when
he reached home he would
get over his insanity but it
is well for him as it is.
Both Mr and Mrs Porter
were Christians. Mr Scruggs
our Consul also goes home
expect to return now + bring
his wife. I am anxious to
hear how M got on about
the Customs. Mrs Carrow told
me they had to pay a heavy
duty on an oil painting they sent
home. Tell her to be sure
and write how she came
out. With love for all
