Letter from Harriet to Mother, December 13, 1881

Harriet explains that Mr. Leaman and his wife are anxious to leave Shanghai because Mrs. Leaman is always sick while in that place. Harriet is afraid that Dr. Stubbert, who is leaving on the Nanking, will be homesick and lonely. According to her, in general, men need a woman by their side to look after them. Harriet thinks that it is strange how the new missionaries in the countryside are waiting for the missionary work in Canton to pass on to them.

Dec 13th 1881.
My dear Mother -
Dr Kerr is coming
over at eight-o-clock this
evening to take us up to
the Shanghai steamer to
say good-bye to Dr Stubbert
who is leaving tonight to
go on the NanKing. Mr Leaman
has written that they are
anxious to have him come
at once. They are still in
Shanghai but are anxious
to get away as soon as
possible her health is always
so miserable there she suffers
constantly from chills and
fever. I had a letter
a little while ago from
Mrs Goddard and she
wrote that she had just

seen her and that she
was so changed so very
thin that she would hardly
have known her. I think
she must look dreadfully for
when she was down here
in perfect health she used
to be very thin almost
painfully so. I am a
little afraid Dr Stubbert
will be homesick and
lonely up there but I hope
he will get on There are not
many men who can get
along out here without some
lady to look after them
and "keep their spirits up."
Mrs Kerr always sends
her love to you all Josie
decided not to come back
for a visit. I doubt if it
would be very well for him
to come out and spend

a year here with nothing
to do. Andrew Happer
has been transferred from
Peking to Shanghai so
perhaps we may see him
down here sometime.
We expected company to-day
Miss Laurence of Ningpo
who has been home to England
but she did not come is coming
tomorrow. She has been
out a long long time I saw
her in Ningpo ten years
ago. Dr and Mrs Thompson
have been living at Dr
Happers but are going to
[?house?]keeping in a day or two.
Mr Henry thinks they
ought to go to the country at
once but there new missionaries
seem to have an idea of
settling down close at hand to
wait for an opening in the

ranks of the missionaries
already at work here.
They seem to feel that the
field here should be left for
them now It seems rather
strange. Dr and Mrs
Graves were in this evening
and wished me to send
their love to the [?inmates?]
of the home on the hill.
We are having summer
weather here yet yesterday
the thermometer was four degrees
above summer heat. It is
delightful weather I like it much
better then colder. Dr Graves
brought me two beautiful pictures
of horses horses heads one in which
there are three all full of life
and excitement and the other
has two who are having a
nice quiet restful time. It
is about time for Dr Kerr to
appear so I will say goodnight
