Letter from Hattie to Mattie, December 14, 1881

Subject

Woman missionaries; Letters; Man-woman relationships

Description

Harriet writes to Mattie about the arrival of Miss Butler. Mrs. Preston was cleaning things out of Mattie's old bureau before Miss Butler came and inquired about the chinaware. Miss Butler and Miss Archibald stayed in Oakland, which is where Sophie and Laura are too. She seems to think that Miss Butler has her heart set on Mr. Fulton and that any future relationship could be good for him. She also informs her sister that Mr. and Mrs. White have a daughter, Lillian Emily, and Hattie McDonald is staying at the Happer's and is in poor health.

Canton
Dec 14th 1881.
My dear Mattie -
I came across
this note from Mrs Preston
when I was taking the
things out of that little
bureau in your room before
Miss Butler came. It seems
from this that she did
understand perfectly that
you and Lucy gave her
the China-ware together .If
she did not write to you I
suppose it was because she
waited for the letter which
she says Mrs Rogers wrote
her that you were going
to write. I have not heard
from Mrs Preston for a
long time. Miss Butler
and Miss Archibald staid
at Mills Seminary while
in Oakland where Sophie

and Laura are. Laura
has recently united with the
church. They say Sophie
has her heart set upon
coming back to China sometime
so she will doubtless come
before long. I do not know
whether Miss Butler will desert
me for Mr Fulton or not I
think it will not be his fault
if she does not. I should'nt
think she could fancy him
but perhaps she can.
It would undoubtedly be a
good thing for him.
Mrs Parkes has been ill
again but is better now
They expect to go home in
March. Did I tell you
that Mr and Mrs White
have a little daughter Lillian
Emily -" I have not seen
her yet Hattie McDonald
is staying at Dr Happers is in very
poor health. Yours affly
Hattie --
