Description

Harriet informs Martha of the last Sabbath and how the eleven people were received, one of which was Lucy Leaman's "protege." This girl has been in the school and her mother recently joined as well. The mother also is employed and helps wash the floors. Harriet hopes there will be a new chapel soon. Dr. Williams is sending $1500 to help rebuild and enlarge the chapel. She says that Miss Butler might help at the boy's school and Miss Archibald has arrived in Shanghai. Mrs. Capp has died but Harriet says she died happily and will be very missed.

My dear Mattie -
I must tell you
about our Communion last
Sabbath. There were eleven
received five of whom were
from the school and the
rest from the Hospital.
I do not know as you
will know the ones from the
school that is all of them.
One you will remember
Lucy Leaman's protege
"Yan Oi" She has been wishing
to apply for several times
but I dissuaded her until
this time and now she really
does seem so changed that
I hope it was right to receive
her Another one was her
Mother who came out from
the country some months
since and has been in

the school some time. She
seems really in earnest If
they do both do well I shall
be so very glad I have felt
no little anxiety on their account.
The Mother is now employed in
the school to wash the floors
and keep it in order. Two
other little girls [?APeng?] and
[?Amin?] sisters were received.
Their father is a Christian
perhaps you will remember
when they first came to
school they got wet in the
rain and their Mother
took off their "shams" and
dried them by your fire.
The other woman from the
school is named [?Shinyee?] I
do not think you know
her. We had a very
crowded house but succeeded
in getting seats for all.
I hope we shall have a

new chapel soon Dr Williams
has sent $ 1500.00 which he
wished to be devoted to building
a ward in the Hosp'l in
memory of Mr Preston. Dr
Kerr wrote and asked him
if he would be willing to have
it spent in rebuilding and
enlarging the chapel and
has has replied that he will
be glad to have it so spent.
I have what I think is a
splendid plan for it if
the rest will think so - as I
hope they will. To-day we
are exercised over some
arrangement to take a few
boarding scholars into the
boys school. Four of the
women in the school and
two of the medical students
have boys that must be
looked after. Miss
Butler taught a school

of sixty boys in Newark
and she would like to
take charge of this. She
would make a good helper in
any branch of the work, but as
she has always had a liking
for medicine it is perhaps best
for her to turn her attention
in that direction. I always
like to have people "have their
rather" if possible I hope
she will not study too hard.
Mrs Perkins writes to me that
they are looking for another
one to send out with you. I
hope they will find one as
good as Miss Butler and
Miss Archibald. We have
just received a letter from
the latter sent back from
Shanghai. I suppose by this
time she has reached
[?Tung?] Chow and is perhaps
ere this Mrs Mateer. Mr
Mateer will have a very
nice wife --

[Note: Letter concludes vertically on page one]
You will
perhaps
have heard
of the death
of Mrs Capp.
She died
very happily
but will
be much
missed
by all.
Mr Mills
is on his way
home. We hear
he is coming
this way so
perhaps we
shall see him
here in Canton
Yours lovingly
Hattie

Mattie
Yan Oi,

/
/
Yan Oi
/
两个小女孩 A Peng 和 A Min 也参加了,
Shinyee,

/
/
/
Kerr
/
/
/
Butler

Mateer

/
/
/
/
Mills
Hattie
