Description

Harriet tells Clara that Mrs. Garfield is a nice woman "worthy of the husband she had". Harriet framed the picture of President Garfield that Clara sent her and stuck a piece from the Cleveland newspaper that talks about his death. She includes the text of the piece she used. Harriet writes that two men from Ohio visited the mission in Canton. They were surprised about the good living conditions in the mission. There are different churches and nationalities represented at Dr. Kerr's evening service.

Canton China
Jan 11th 1882
My dear Clara -
Our third and
I suppose last opportunity
of sending letters down to go
by the City of Rio de Janeiro is this
morning but we did not send
any as the Gaelic is to go out
the next day and if she does
I presume she will get to
America first. The last mail
brought me the copy of the note
you wrote to Mrs Garfield
and her reply. I am very
glad you wrote to her and
that she sent you such a
nice note in reply. I have
wished very much to write
to her perhaps I will but
I cannot for this mail.
She is a grand woman worthy
of the husband she had
and what higher praise

could be given. I do not
know whether I have
ever told you how I
framed the photograph of
the President that you
sent. I put it in one of
a pair of little frames I
bought from San Francisco
a very pretty little frame.
Across the bottom of the picture
I put a little piece of black
gauze and the lines cut
from a Cleveland paper.
"A Queen sent flowers to rest upon his bier
Each passer paid the tribute of a tear
God set a glowing rainbow in the sky
To bid no hope that though a man should die
His mercy and His grace to no shall be
A strength and shield to all eternity."
It stands on the bracket
that Em gave to me and
all around it I have
twined the ivy you sent
me long since. It has
always seemed too nice

to put up on the wall but
I am very glad to have
it for this and it looks
very pretty indeed.
He was a grand man
and his memory will ever
be cherished and the
influence of his life and
death be long felt. In a
letter I received by last
mail from Miss [?Carter?]
of Newark she wrote that
she thought I must be glad
glad and proud to
belong to the state that
gave to the nation such
a man as Garfield.
I am very proud of
my state. Mrs Henry
says we Ohio people do
not wear our honors weekly
but are altogether too
proud of them.

There have just been two
Ohio men visiting Canton.
Methodist preachers home
Missionaries have been
living in Nevada They were
rather surprise to find
foreign missionaries living
so comfortably and in
so much style. I suppose it
is very different from their
rough western life. Their names
were Willis both were excellent
singers. We are going to have
a new book for our Sabbath
evening services with the notes
Spiritual Songs so I shall
no longer be responsible for
the selection of turns. The
congregating at the evening service
at Dr Kerr's embraces so many
representations of different churches
+ nations that there is great
diversity of tasks about [?music?]
& rather difficult to please all

[Note: Letter concludes vertically on page one]
With love
Ever
Yr Aff
Hattie
