Letter from Hattie to Mother, April 11, 1882

Mail steamers; Women missionaries; Sick; Family

Harriet writes to her mother that the mail has been very irregular lately, but she hopes soon they will get mail every week. She also corrects a previous statement about Henry's article not being published. It was published under Mr. Henry's name instead. Dr. Ellinwood's awkwardness with their family will not prevent him from checking in on Mattie in New York. They have recently had some visitors. Harriet closes with updates on the Kerr family and includes a letter to Hattie Kerr.

My dear Mother
Your letter of Feby
18th came a four days since
by some stray steamer We
have not had a [u]regular[/u]
mail for almost four weeks
As Dr Graves says our
[u]regular[/u] mails are very
irregular. The steamer
that should have come a
week or two since the Peking
we hear is laid up for repairs.
A new one has come out from
England which will take
these letters the "Arabic" and
there is a match steamer the
Coptic to come soon. It is
said that we may have
a weekly mail after a little
but I do not know how
much prospect there is of it.

And now first I must tell
you that I am very glad
to say that was a mistake
that I wrote about Dr Ellinwood
not publishing what Henry
wrote about the Third Church
The article that was published
[u]was[/u] what [u]Henry[/u] sent and
I suppose they accidentally
made a mistake in crediting
it to Mr Henry the names
being the same. Of course the
extreme modesty of the Noyes
family prevented Henry from
making any special mention
of himself in connection with the
matter. I would have corrected
this before but I could not remember
whether I had written about it
I really suppose it is rather awkward
after all that has passed for
Dr Ellinwood to see or hear or
write or think of any of us, but
I feel perfectly sure that

his opinion of us nevertheless is
not lowered. Some one from
New York wrote to me a while
ago that he had just heard
of Martha's being in New York
and was going to see her as
soon as he could. I had
a letter from Mrs Perkins by
last mail and she said
she wanted to go over and
see her soon. M- seems to
be very successful in making
missionary speeches. Mrs
Perkins write that every one
think she is a very interesting
speaker. I told her before
she went home that I know
the only difficulty she would
find would be to find a
stopping place. We
have been having two ladies
with us the past two weeks
Miss Coffman from Siam
who is on her way home
after eight years of hard work

I think Clara saw her in
Cleveland before she came out
She came on the same steamer
with Martha. She is much
Worn down and quite nervous
but I think she will soon get
well she seemed to improve very
much while she was here.
I hope she will visit you
while she is at home. She is
from western Pennsylvania
a real Pennamite a good
girl and a grand missionary
She is only a little older than
I but she has a good many
gray hairs. I wanted to send
a parcel home by her but
her trunks were so full I did
not like to ask her to take
anything. She is going right
home to Canonsburg but may
visit Ohio before she comes
back to Siam. She will hear
[u]all about Mrs Kerr [/u]in Canonsburg.
Josie is as bad as ever about writing
