Canton China
April 15th 1882
My dear Father -
I have a little time
for a letter-writing this evening
and my first letter shall
be to you. We have just
had a visit from Joseph
Cook of Boston and his wife
We know that he has been
in India for some time
and expected he would
visit Canton. Yesterday he
came up and in searching
for some of the missionaries
came to Mrs Henrys, so they
were of course delighted to
have them stay there. They
only spent one day however
came up yesterday, and
went back on the steamer
to-night. They reached here
about four-o-clock in the
afternoon. Mrs Henry at
once sent around and
invited all the missionaries
to come and meet them
in the evening. We had
a most interesting evening
and after some hesitation
he accepted the urgent request
of the Missionaries to give us
a lecture to-day which we
all enjoyed. He seems a
great man - both mentally
and physically - is fine looking
not handsome has blue
eyes and light hair.
His lecture to-day was on
the subject of the prospect of
the spread of Christianity
as compared with Materialism
Agnosticism +c +c the various
forms of error at the present
day. His views are most
encouraging and I suppose
has has studied all these
subjects and takes as broad
and correct views of the state
of the world as any one can.
He certainly impresses one with
the feeling that he knows a
great deal and that his
opinions are almost sure to be
correct. He is strictly orthodox
and "puts things" most clearly
and forcibly. We all
regretted that his stay was
so short. I would have
liked exceedingly to hear
him preach tomorrow -
They managed to see a
great deal of Canton in their
one day had Mr Henry
for a guide and he cannot
be surpassed in that line
or hardly in any other.
He is a grand little man
and is little only physically.
I wish he had grown a
little taller I know he
would like to be a taller
man but we could not
love and admire him any
more if he were as tall as
Goliath. Our new little Doctor
Doctor Thomson is just as good
and nice as he can be they
say an excellent doctor but
we cannot say as much for
him as a preacher. He
has studied theology and
medicine both. His wife
is a jewel it always makes me
feel happy just to think of
her - and there never was a
more earnest missionary from
the time of the Apostle Paul
to the present. They hoped
to go with Mr + Mrs White to
Linchau next Autumn but the
home they hoped to rent they
have been obliged to give up
on account of the opposition
of one of the officials. I hope
after a while they will
succeed in getting a place
Mr White and Mr Fulton
[Note: Letter concludes vertically on page one]
have gone up there now but will just stay in their boat a
few days I
suppose and
come back.
There are two
men to be
baptized.
It is nice
for Mr White
so soon to
commence
receiving members
"reaping the
fruits" of the
seed that has
been sewn
by others.
