Letter from Hattie to Mother, November 20, 1882

Health; Sickness; Fever; New Year

Hattie writes that the letters from home that she received today brought sad news about Edward, who apparently had an accident. However, they were written five weeks ago, so she hopes that Edward is better now. Harriet tells her mother that Mrs. Happer has been having a fever since they got back from the country. She is not the only one who has been sick lately. Harriet thinks that this widespread poor health is due to the lack of rain. She enclosed a handkerchief and hopes that next year is better for her mother.

My dear Mother
The letters that came
to day brought me rather
sad news from the dear
ones at home. But it is
five weeks now since they
were written so I hope by
this time Edward is almost
well again I used to think
if anything bad happened
at home I would perhaps
feel some presentiment of
it but facts show that I do
not. Mrs Kerr came over
this evening. She was very
sorry to learn of his accident
she admires Edward very
much as indeed she does
all the family. Sat evening
she was in and went over
the whole list giving Miss Butler
and Miss Niles a splendid
account of each one
and the best of it was
that every word was true.
She had a long letter from
Josie today and he sent
her his photograph. He
seems really to have take

a turn for the better now.
I hope it will last. Hattie
is getting almost as tall as I
am and is growing very
pretty. She is a dear child
and seems happier now
and not to pine so much
for America. It seems
strange that Josie Kerr
and John Happer did
not know each other when
they met in Wooster but had
to be introduced. I am
so sorry to hear such
reports of John. Mrs Happer
has been having fever since we
got back from the country in
fact nearly everyone has
had more or less fever this
Autumn and there is a great
deal of sickness among
the Chinese --- I suppose it
is perhaps because there has
been so very little rain
this year. I enclose a
pocket handkerchief for you
in this. I also bought a little
crape shawl of hdkf which I
want to send you but do not
know whether it will go in a
letter or not it is so heavy. I do
hope the New Year that is coming so
soon will be a happier one for you.
