Letter from Harriet to Father, November 20, 1882

Hattie writes to her father about Henry's third church, which has 21 members. Harriet sent Mattie a copy of Woman's Work in China expecting that her article would be there but it was not published. Harriet wrote this article in response to a letter that Miss Lawrence wrote in a previous number which portrayed the work in Canton in a negative way. She thinks that probably the editors did not receive her article. Harriet still sees Miss Niles as a little girl even though she is a doctor now. If she is sick, Harriet would rather go to Dr. Kerr than to Miss Niles. Harriet enclosed a pink crepe necktie.

My dear Father,
I suppose you will
not hear anything from
Henry by this mail as he
is away in the country
He has no doubt written
to you about his last trip
when he organized a
new church the third
that he has organized
since his return There
were nineteen members
and two more were
received making twenty
one a very good number
to begin with. I send
to Mattie the [?Nr?] number
of Woman's Work in China.
We were all very much
surprised to find that

the article I wrote for it
does not appear. I have
written up to find out whether
they received it or not. If
they did I think we will
want to know the reason why
they did not publish. I
think I wrote to you of the
letter Miss Lawrence wrote
in the May [?No?] in which she
said that the work in
Canton was [?disemiaying?] &c &c
We all thought it ought to be
corrected and they appointed
to me to write something in
reply which I did and to
our surprise it is not published
After they had published
her letter I think they were
in all fairness bound to
at least state that they had
received my paper and that
we protested against such
a report of the state of the
work here. The Editors

of the magazine are not
considered in any way responsible
for the articles as they are
always published with the
full name of the writer. I
think it is rather a hard case
for them to publish that although
a great deal of money has been
spent & a great many missionaries
have been sent here the
work is [?disemiaying?] &c &c and
not even allow us who are
most concerned to give our
ideas at all. Possibly they
did not receive my article.
Did I ever tell you that
the article that I felt so
indignant that Dr Ellinwood
did not publish from Henry
was published only they
got the names mixed up
and gave it as Mr BC Henrys
Miss Niles MD is living
with us now. I imagine
she would like to take

up her abode here permanently
but I do not know how it
will be. She was sent [?either?]
to Dr Happers or to Nam King
They are very anxious to have
her go up there & think it was
[?very sorry?] in the Board to send
her here. When they had plead
so hard for her. I like her
very much but it seems very
strange to think she is a Doctor
she seems so like a little girl.
If I were very sick and
wanted to get well I am
sure I would prefer to be
doctored by Dr Kerr.
I bought some silk hdkfs for you
a few days ago but I am
afraid I cannot send them
by mail. I will enclose a
pink crepe necktie. If you
cannot use it yourself
you can give it to
Emily, and I am
sure she will put it to some
use.
