Canton China
My dear Father Dec 22nd 1884
I have only time to
write a few words tonight as I
am going down in the morning
to spend Christmas and New Years
with my "family" in Macau.
I have had quite a time
to decide I wished to go very
much but travelling is so
expensive here it is $6.00 down
and back and that seems
a great deal to spend just to
stay down for a few days
for I must come back the
day after New Years.
Still I should have been
so much disappointed and
it would have been such a
disappointment to them that
I could not make up my
mind not to go. I am
afraid we shall never any
of us be contented in Canton
again we enjoy the rest and
quiet of Macau so much.
But we have all determined
to make a stand against
visiting and eating so much
and see if we cannot have
one evening at home more
hereafter. Yesterday was
our Communion Sabbath. I
enjoyed the day very much
A good number of our church
members were present and
the service seemed very solemn
and I think we were all
thankful to have such an
opportunity of meeting together
so peacefully after all the
trouble of the past few months
There were five new members
received and three more
applicants. The five who
were received were all very
satisfactory. One was from
the hospital a woman who
has an incurable cancer She
only came to the hospital about
three weeks since but is very
intelligent and seems to have
received the gospel at once
and is very happy and
not afraid to die now.
Another of the women is
from the School and the
third is the mother of our
cook's wife. Her daughter
wishes so much to [?unite?] with
the church and every one
thinks she is prepared but
he will not hear of it. We
are all uniting in prayer for
him. I wish that you
and the rest of the family
would join us in asking that
he may soon become converted.
He has been so good to us
all these years and it seems
to me I live in constant dread
lest he should be sick and
die unconverted. One of the
men who was received yesterday
came down from Lien-Chow
to unite with the church. He
is a scholar and a man of
property and we hope that
he may be very useful. He
is going to go to Henry's Training
School. We are glad that
Henry is to have charge of
the Training School I
presume it will be differently
managed from what it
has been. Dr Happer seems
better they expect to go home
in Feb or March. Dr Kerr
seems much better for
which we rejoice. And
now with much love for all
from Your Aff daughter
Harriet.

Happer
