Title
Letter from Hattie to Em, January 7, 1885
Subject
Prohibition--United States; Missionaries--Study and teaching; Betrothal
Description
Harriet writes to her sister Emily about the new Baptist brother Mr. Hickson and his wife. She talks about Miss Young who is of their Macau mission and who reminds Harriet fondly of Em. She discusses Lucy's wedding and how Lucy thought she would get proposed to by Mr. Painter but ended up engaged to Mr. Leaman. Harriet mentions Lucy's boarding school and also brings up the Prohibitionists that seem to be dividing the Republican party.

My dear Em,
I have just come back
from the meeting this evening
which was held in Mr Henry's
house now occupied by Miss Stein.
Mr Hickson the new Baptist
brother led the meeting. He
speaks very well after he gets well
commenced. I should think
that he ought to make a good
missionary. Mrs Hickson is quite
pretty but he is one of the very
homeliest men in the world.
His face looks as though it had
been accidentally flattened in
some way. Miss Young of their
mission who is now in Macau
with Miss Lewis and Miss Butler
is a splendid girl. Her name
is Em, and she makes me
think of you in every way all
the time. She is a very superior
girl has an excellent mind and
good education and is very
unusually good and unassuming
and sensible so you can see
for yourself her very strong the
resemblance is. She is large,
and stoops, her eyes are something
like yours but her hair is not, it
is very straight and has a
shade of red in it in the
sunshine but looks brown.
I am glad she could go down
to Macau for a rest. She is persecuted
with kindness. Dr and Mrs Graves
want to make a baby of her, and
pet her so that it is unbearable
and she never can be alone for
a minute scarcely. This must
seem ridiculous to you and it
is. I think if the married
ladies here in Canton would
give more time to mission work
they would not need to take up
so much of our time.
I am so sorry you did not get that
fan. I have had it ever since
Lucy was married and have
carried it a great deal. When I
bought it to carry at her wedding
I intended that you should have
it sometime I wonder whose
hands it has fallen into. There
is a gentleman here from Hong Chow
now a Mr [?Painter?] who I know
Lucy thought would have proposed
to her if Mr Leaman had not,
when she was in Hong Chow.
I do not know whether he had
it in mind or not, but he certainly
is a very different man from
Mr Leaman. He is not a
minister but is a missionary of
the Southern Presbyterian Board.
He went home to take charge
of one of their missionaries Dr
Fishmore whose mind became affected
when he had been out here about two
years. He was not so bad that Mr
Painter could exercise any control
over him but had enough to cause
him an untold amount of anxiety.
I have been owing Lucy a letter
a long time. She opened her
Boarding School Oct 13th
If Martha is still at home you must
tell her I do not write to her because
every letter I expect to hear of her
starting for China. I share with
you all in the grief and mortification
of having such a President as Cleveland.
I am s "Blaine Man" and I have
thought all the time that the
Prohibitionists were making a
great mistake to divide the Republican
party so. Still we will hope that
the Democrats will not wreck
the Ship of State. They no doubt
think it is high time for them to
have their turn.

We hope
for another
mail from
home this
week.
With much
love for all
from
