March 8th 1889
My dear Clara,
I must tell you all about
my short stay in Yokohama.
After landing I said goodbye
to the Methodist sisters and
procured a [?jiuriksha?] and went
first to the Bible Home where I
found Mr Loomis nephew of Dr
Loomis of San Francisco & He
invited me to go to their home for
tea but said they could not
ask me to stay all night as they
had no room. There was a
gentleman with him in his
office to whom I was introduced
but I did not get the name.
He is the pastor of the foreigners
church in Yokohama. He asked
me if I was related to "Brother
Noyes" who has just come out

to Tokio. He is the future
probation man, they speak of
him very highly as a good man
but it seems a pity that he did
not find his work in the home
land under all the circumstances.
Dr Hepburn says the Japanese
read all the papers and
understand all about the
way in which the questions came
up between him and the Board
that they would not send him &c &c
This minister also asked me
if I had ever been in China
and I told him with emphasis
that I had been there twenty
years , and he said, "I should
not think you were more than
twenty." The Chief Engineer
was expressing his astonishment
last night at my youthful
appearance despite the years

spent in China. He is very
bald and very gray , good
looking though makes me think
of Henry but I supposed he
was much older, but I find
he is only one year older than
I am. I do not know but
I shall have to tell him how
little difference there is in our
ages it seems almost like a
joke for him to look so
venerable . He is quite full
of fun is a native of the Isle
of Man. Mr Fuksman
always has something funny to
say. One morning when it
was a little smoother than
unusal we expressed our satisfaction
and he informed us that he had
to sit up all night to get it
smoothed down. One day
he said they put yeast in

the barometer to make it rise
and got too much in and had
to get a boy to sit on it and
keep it down. Evenings he would
ask us to go out on deck telling
us he had a fine moon and
several stars out. He told Miss
Griffith they weighed the anchor
in San Francisco and would
weigh it again in Yokohama
and would then be able to tell
whether it had lost anything
in weight. He has been very
kind all the way across. I
am afraid he will feel
rather lonely now that all
the Methodist sisters have
left. He enjoyed singing very
much and we used to sing
for awhile evenings. If the
weather keeps like this we
shall have a fine trip the

The Chief Engineer
is quite chagrinned
over it.
