that we had
a "[u]beastly[/u]"
trip across
that is the

they use
to express

March 8th 1889
My dear Edward -
Thursday morning at
Dr Hepburns had breakfast with
the two gentleman, it seemed
strange to see Dr Hepburn pouring
out the tea in Mrs Hepburn's place.
He had a very nice breakfast
but says he does not enjoy
housekeeping very well especially
as his son is a dyspeptic and
he has some difficulty in getting
what he can eat. After prayers
and a farewell talk with the
dear old Doctor I bade him
goodbye procured a [?jin rik sha?]
and went down to the shops to
get a few articles Miss Butler
had sent for . I bought to give
to her a paper knife similar
to the one she sent you . I
could not find one that was
quite as pretty but it is similar.
Met at the shops my [?cheem?]
Miss Imhoff. From there came
to Miss Crosby's the ladies home
had an hour or two in the
school. before dinner . There are
136 scholars and it was to
me exceedingly interesting to see
them .They are so polite and
gentle in their manners I think
they would be much more
attractive to strangers than the
Chinese . The ladies in charge
have not any of them been out
as long as I have but they are
all so gray and look like such
[u]old ladies[/u] , I thought that is the
way we shall look in our
home in Canton a few years
hence . After dinner I once
more called a [?jinrikska?]
and came back to Mr
Loomis' where there was quite an
accumulation of boxes for me
to take to Canton. Mr
Loomis came down to the wharf
with me helping me through the
customs and called a boat for
me and I embarked for
the Oceanic and at 4 PM
we were again under weigh
The Purser kindly offered to
change my room and I now
have for the remaining days a
beautiful room on the upper
deck two thirds as large as the
North bedroom with a bed wider
than yours . So I shall be
very comfortable especially
if the weather continues as
pleasant as it is this morning.
There will we hope be only
four full days after this one
The Engineer says we will
get in at eight Wednesday
morning the Captain says
at noon . in either case I
shall probably go up on the
night steamer and reach
Canton Thursday morning .
That will not be quite so nice
as to get there in the afternoon
every one is so busy in the
morning . I hope Dr Kerr
and Martha will come
down to HongKong but very
likely it may not be convenient
for them . The boy is
opening the ports so we
shall have plenty of fresh
air. I wished very much to
go up to Tokio but there was
hardly time enough I think
I have told you all that happened
"on shore". Your aff sister

我找不到一个很漂亮但很相似的。
在商店遇见了我亲爱的伊姆霍夫小姐。
从那里来到克罗斯比小姐家，
女士们的家在学校里呆了一两个小时。
晚餐前 。
有 136 位学者，
看到他们对我来说非常有趣。
他们彬彬有礼，
举止文雅，
我认为他们对陌生人比中国人更有吸引力。
负责的女士们没有一个像我这么久出来过，
但她们都是灰白的，
看起来像个老太太，
我想这就是几年后我们在广州的家中的样子。
吃完晚饭，
我又叫了一个 rikskaw，
然后回到卢米斯先生那里，
那里有很多箱子要我带去广州。
卢米斯先生和我一起来到码头帮助我通过海关，
并为我叫了一艘船，
然后我登上了大洋洲号，
下午 4 点我们再次称重 乘务长好心地提议换我的房间，
我现在可以换剩下的了天 上 层 的 一间 漂亮 的 房间 ，
比北的卧室大三分之二 ，
床比你的还要宽。
所以我会很舒服，
尤其是如果天气继续像今天早上一样宜人。
我们希望在这之后只有整整四天工程师说我们将在星期三早上八点到达船长说中午。
无论如何我都可能坐夜船上星期四早上到达广州。
下午赶到那里可还不好，
每个人早上都这么忙。
我希望科尔博士和玛莎能来香港，
但很可能对他们来说不方便。
男孩正在打开港口，
这样我们就会有充足的新鲜空气。
我非常想去东京，
但时间不够，
