My dear Edward,
This is the day for
the mail to leave again for
America. I have a number
of letters that I wish to write.
For once I have a good
supply written in advance for
the "home on the hill." The
Simmons go today, some one Martha
I think asked us one day how
we would feel if the steamer
that was to take us home was
in Hong Kong. I said I should
be "(ho fom hi)" ([u] very [/u] [u] much [/u] [u] delighted [/u]
This rather astonished my
family but I explained that
I meant of course if I were in
the place of the Simmons and it
was time for me to go home
again. They seem very
glad to go, she has never
had good health, but has
kept up wonderfully well. I
hear one of the teachers it is
ALin whom you know from
hearing me talk about her
singing one of the hymns over
and over. She is acting on
a suggestion I made to her a
few minutes ago that she
should teach one of our blind
Bible Women who has come
in from the country to attend
communion some hymns. The
Bible woman was talking to
me when I was out in school
this morning and told me how
much she wished she could
sing a few hymns. In her
village there are five women
who have united with the
church and they meet together
every Sunday and try to have
a service. They pray together
and she says she knows
two hymns to sing but wishes
very much to know more
and here where there is so
much singing going on all
the time it seems as though she
ought to be able to learn.
Now ALin has brought out her
accordion to assist, she has
learned to play on that herself
without any teaching. I often
wonder what you would
think of her voice. It is not
trained of course and she does
not always use it in the
best way. I wonder what
could be made of it if she
could have the advantage that
some have at home. The
singing here now is fairly
good. I think so many of
the girls learning to play
and singing so much with
an instrument has been a
great help to them. Sophie
plays very nicely and she
has never had scarcely any
instruction but she has practiced
a great deal. She has a good
alto voice and sings soprano well.
We have now some very good
singers in the mission circle,
and they are quite appreciative
of their capabilities. It still
remains cool very different they
say from last year. Only
three days more and decoration
day will come again. How well
I remember the two days while
I was at home. I always
feel so glad to think that
the Careys have taken the lot
next to ours. It seems very pleasant
to think of friends being laid to
rest near together, but still
better to think of them as
together in heaven. I found
the other day in a book that I
was reading the inscription that
I would like to have on the
North side of our monument,
"Waiting for the coming of our
Lord Jesus Christ." It is in
[Continued vertically on the first page]
1st Cor I, the last clause of the 7th verse. If any of
you should
get an opportunity
to ask Henry
I wish you
would ask him
if he would not
like that. I
have never felt
satisfied
with anything
else but this
I am sure
I would
wish to have
if the rest
of you would

necessary to put
anything more
on it for many
