Canton China
June 13th 1889.
My dear Mary -
We must send
our letter this time before the
mail comes in . It seems such
a long time since we have had
letters . Yesterday Mr Cunningham
sent us the new schedules. If I
can get time I will copy it and
send on to you or perhaps I can
use Miss Butlers and send you
mine .It has several dates for
1890 on it. the eighties will soon
all be gone . We shall never forget
them I am sure . How I wish I
could see you this June morning
instead of writing . I am sorry
you all have to work so hard
and get so tired this is a very
busy world but the rest remaineth.
How busy Mother was to the
very last but Father had a
quiet restful time . I have
not felt since I came back
that I could get into the work

as I ought to. Of course while
Sophie has been undecided we
felt rather unsettled but now I
think her plans are really settled
for the third and last time .
Her wedding day was appointed
first for the 10th of May then
changed to the 28th and now
it is to be the 29th of July.
and I think this time it is like
the laws of the Medes and Persians.
She is to be married in the
church so that all the Chinese
can come . It seems very nice
for her as it is the Preston Memorial
Chapel. Dr S Wells Williams gave
a thousand dollars towards it in
memory of Mr Preston . I think
she will be married late in the
afternoon and then the reception
will be afterwards. Miss Butler
will make the cake and we
are going to have only two kinds
and ice cream and lemonade
At least that is the present idea.

We will have the examination
and the closing exercises of the
school the week before. but the
scholars will stay for the
wedding and we will dismiss
them July 30th Tuesday so
you can think of us then as so
doing . It will be very soon after
you receive these letters .I suppose
Em is finishing her year's work
today or tomorrow and I hope
that Sarah is through before
this .How nice it would be if I
could get home for vacation, that
would make it seem very different.
Because Father and Mother have
gone to the home above it does not
make me feel less longing
to be at home and Sarah once
wrote as long as there are two of
us left together I am sure
we shall have a good measure
of happiness and there does
not seem the slightest probability
that any one will be left very

long alone and how nice it
will be for the last one to go
home and make the circle in
heaven complete again.
I love to think of the quiet
hillside when I hope we
will all rest together when
life is done together "waiting
the coming of our Lord
Jesus Christ. I long to
see it as it looks now
since you have it all
put in order .I hope
the myrtle will grow
nicely and that it was
pretty and green on
decoration day.
There are ever so many
things of which I wish
to write but the man has
come now to take the letters
to the office I did not
finish this this morning
so must close now. I hope
to write some more this eve

[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
And if sent
tomorrow
morning
they will
probably
be in time
for the
mail
With love [?ever?]
Hattie

Mary,
/

Sophie
S Wells Williams

Sarah

/
/
/
/
/
/
Hattie
