July 6th 1889 .
My dear Sara -
Yesterday we had a
perfect feast of letters . In
the morning the mail by the
Arabic came in bringing letters
up to June 4th and in the
afternoon the mail by the City
of Peking which left San Francisco
nine days before the Arabic
put in an appearance with the
letters written May 27th. All
together I had forty two pages
from home and I do not
remember how many Martha
had but nearly as many
for her birthday letters came
in the morning mail . I
never expected to see the
time when we would have
two mails from America in
one day. But we will
have to pay for it by
waiting until the 19th to
hear again . There is
to be a new steamer on
the line soon the China
I believe it is to be called
and I think it is to stop
regularly at Honolulu will
carry the flag of the
Hawaiin Islands. We
hear that Mary Happer
Damon has grown quite
large , That must seem
so strange she was always
so slender . But "they say"
she is so beautiful that
people stop on the street
to gaze after her. She
and Mr Damon are a
very handsome pair and
well matched he has
dark hair and eyes ---
Sophie and Mr Wisner
will look very well together
he has dark hair + eyes
and she light but they are
not as handsome a couple.
Sophie if they are able
to remain will exert an
excellent influence in
the mission I am sure . She
will be the ruling sprit in
their firm I imagine she
has strong Presbyterian
principles he was brought
up as a Methodist .
It is possible they may
go to Linchau . They way
seems to be open now for
any one to go there . It
seems as thought it would
be so nice if Mr Henry would
go there and I think if Mrs
Henry were willing ^they might but she
is not. We hear that a
Doctor Mackle I think
is the name and his wife
and a Miss Johnstone their
"adopted Mother" I believe
all from Wooster are
coming out this fall to
go to Lin chau .It will
be nice if some one gets
into the interior . No one
knows what is best to be
done about the Fultons going
up to Lung Chau a thousand
miles in the interior . I
think no one in the
mission favors it really
and many feel very
decidedly opposed to it .
Dr Kerr has gone to
HongKong to meet Olivia
and they will perhaps
come up today (this is the
8th you see I did not
finish my letter the day
that I commenced. I
presume Olivia will be
here for the next six months
at least . I suppose it is
very warm in Hainan
now. Mary Stoaks wrote
to Dr Fulton of her engagement
and that she expects to
be married soon. She
also wrote to Sophie telling
her of her great joy --
[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
I will
enclose a
couple of
Macao
stamps
and one
from Japan.
Some one
may
like to
have them.
Ever yr loving

Olivia,
