She thinks of Em all by herself at home and references the Johnstown flood disaster that occurred in May. She talks about her siblings' travel plans from Wadsworth to Seville. She hopes that Brother Notestein gets a position soon and is curious when Mary Stoaks will get married. She also discusses Clara's instrumental music.

My dear Edward,
We were greatly disappointed
when the last steamer came
in brining us no letters from
home. But we shall hope
to have a double share when
the next mail comes which
we have been impatiently
waiting for. It is due tomorrow
in Hong Kong. I hear that
that fast train the "Golden
Gate Special" is taken off
from the line so there is a
point at which even American
extravagance pauses, as
it did not pay, it was
nearly twice as expensive
as the ordinary cars which
are good enough for any
one. I am glad I had
a glimpse of it is was a beautiful
train and seemed to glide
along. I hear nothing
positive about our new
railroad which is to be the
making of Seville. The
last letters from home were
written June 22nd. I was
so sorry you had such a
rainy time going down to
Wooster and that Mary
did not even hear the
music after all. I hope
she will tell me some time
how her dress fared.
It seemed lonely to think
of Em all alone in the
"home on the hill" How glad
I would have been to have
kept her company. What
terrible [?freshets?] there have
been how fearful the Johnstown
disaster. I suppose it will
soon be rebuilt and in a
measure the story will be
forgotten except by those who
lost friends. I was
sorry you could not get over
to Wadsworth for their Commencement
Why do they always appoint
it on a rainy day. I do
not think Em will be
able to conceal her age if she
does [u] look [/u] as young as her
scholars, if they know they
their parents have been to
school with her in the
years gone by. It was too
bad she had to wait so
at Sterling. If they get
another railroad through
I presume it will take
two days for her to get
from Wadsworth to Seville.
I am waiting with much
interest to hear what Brother
Notestein decides to do. I
very much fear he will
never find just the right
place. I wonder when
Mary Stoaks will be
married. She has written
to Dr Fulton and Sophie
"friends of a day" about
her engagement but is
keeping it a secret from
Martha and me but I
suppose we shall hear if
she gets married from some
source. Clara wrote about
her instrumental music. I
presume she has not any we
could use, one of the girls
played 'The Battle of Waterloo
but we do not care especially
to have them give much
time to instrumental music.
I wish [u] very [/u] [u] much [/u] if you
could find that piece you
sang Christmas a year ago, "Softly
sing the love of Jesus," you would
send me a copy. I intended to
bring one & I remember Clara
got it for me but I must have
failed to put it in for "I have
it not." A copy of the soprano &
words will answer if you have
not a copy to spare, but I would
like the whole. If Clara
would care to send any pieces
