Dr. Fulton told Harriet that some people from the Ashland church have broken away from it and formed a congregational church. The Board gave permission to the Fultons to go home. Emma Young arrived in the United States after one month departing from Hong Kong. The steamer that took her to Hong Kong was delayed for a couple of hours because of its cargo which was subject to $140,000 worth of export duties. Harriet and the other missionaries are trying to save money to pay off their debt.

My dear Clara -
You are busy about
your Saturday's work
now we have almost lived
through our Saturday. I
wonder if Em is at home
yet . I suppose the trains
on the two roads [u]fail[/u] to
connect as successfully
as ever-- I hope you
will have plenty of spare
time on hand when
this mail reaches you
for we are sending you
a large one . Sabbath comes
tomorrow and then Monday
morning we look for the
home mail . It will bring
the letters that you sent
about the 1st of Aug.
Dr Swan has just
sent over for Miss Butler
to go and take care of
little Agnes Gilman
tonight so she must
be worse for an hour or
two ago he thought it
would not be necessary
for any one to go - I
think they expect her to
be much better or decidedly
worse soon . Mrs Gilman
is so hopeful she does not
know the worst she says
that every breath since the
baby was hurt has been
a prayer . I hope she
will not live unless she
can entirely recover.
I have thought often of
Mary Beer. I do not
remember whether that
is the name of the afflicted
one or of the other . I wonder
if she is still living The
last I heard of her was
that she had cancer and
would probably not live
long Dr Fulton tells us
that the disaffected ones of
the Ashland church have
left it and formed a
Congregational church I
believe . The Board has
given permission for the
Fultons to go home this year
The last mail brought news
of Emma Young's safe
arrival in America. We
are all [u]so very anxious[/u] to
hear how she found her
Mother .She found letters
in San Francisco telling
her that she was not so well.
She has consumption and
I suppose cannot live long.
She expected to reach
home just one month from
the day she left Hong Kong.
It does not seem very
long since we went to
the steamer to see her
off . I wonder if I wrote
to you then about the
cargo on the steamer which
took her to Hong Kong.
It was delayed in starting
a couple of hours on account
of the duty. There is an
export duty on things
shipped from her and
the duty on the things shipped
on that one steamer was
$ 140,000.00 [u]140 thousand[/u]
I was [u]so surprised[/u] I asked
Dr Kerr and some others
to guess the amount and
they guessed a few hundred
dollars . This was only the
duty so you can imagine how
valuable the cargo must have
been . Miss Butler jas
pinned up a motto in my room
"Economy is Wealth," so we
are starting out on this line
after [u]wealth[/u] or at least
enough of it to pay our debts.
Last month we did not buy
anything except our current
[illegible] for board etc and
we saved nearly thirty dollars
But we cannot do that
[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
Every month
my share
of all the
repairing painting
etc that was
done before I
came back
amounted
to about
$100.00.
But I
do not mind
am very
glad that
it is done +
it will last
some time.
