Description

Harriet writes to Clara that she plans to write many letters because the communion Sunday is coming up and she won't have time to write them. A Professor E P Thwing and his wife are staying with Canton and Harriet is very impressed with their travels and intellect. The wife is a dedicated student of Chinese. So is Miss Lewis, but she is not successful like Miss Butler at speaking.

Canton China
Nov 21st 1889
My dear Clara,
I have made quite
an early start this morning,
as I wakened at three and
could not go to sleep again
I concluded when the
clock struck five I might
as well get up and have
a visit with you at home
as it does not seem likely
that we shall have much
spare time for writing for
this mail. Next Sabbath
will be our Communion Sabbath
so we shall have extra meetings
this week. We have now
in school counting the
teachers and all seventy
five. They are coming in
rather slowly but I presume
we shall soon have the full

number Mrs Candict left
us yesterday morning. We
had a very pleasant visit
with her. She spoke several
times to the Chinese through
an interpreter, and they
enjoyed it very much.
Professor Reverend E P Thwing MD
and his wife are at Dr
Kerr's and likely to remain
there some time. They are
going to stay for the Conference
at Shanghai next May
in the meantime he will
probably make a trip to
India. In last nights China
Mail was the following notice
of his arrival. Prof E P Thwing MD
of Brooklyn New York who arrived
in Hong Kong by the steamer
Belgic intended spending
some months in China and
[--Japan--] India and is at present

residing in Canton. The
Professor has made mental science
and anthropology special subjects
of investigation and will direct
his attention to these lines of
study among the races of
Eastern and Southern Asia
He has traveled far and
wide during the past thirty
years and his "Outdoor life
in Europe Rambles from Russia
to Spain has reached its
21st thousand He proposes
during his stay to lecture
in scientific and literary
topics or to give elocutionary
entertainments." Dr Kerr
sent this notice to the
paper. I think they will
arrange to have some kind
of a literary entertainment
at Dr Kerr's next week
to commence with. He is a
fine looking man "Eddie"

will look exactly like him
if he lives to be as old. He
has a fine voice and is they
say a first class player as
well as singer. It is the
general impression that he has
an excellent opinion of Prof
Thwing M.D. Last evening
he led our mission prayer
meeting and called on Mrs
Thwing to close with prayer.
I think one of the reforms
he intends to institute while
here is to get "the sisters" at
work in the prayer meeting
Mrs Thwing makes me think
a little of Aunt Fay is not
so small. The Prof is
quite strong and stylish
but she is just the reverse.
She is faithfully studying
Chinese and will get it
very well we think, if as Prof
Thwing says the millenium does
not come too soon.

[Continued vertically on the first page]
She will
get it
much
better than
Miss Lewis
has I think
Miss Lewis
has studied
most faithfully
and has
a good knowledge
of character
but her
speaking
is dreadful.
Miss Butler
speaks very well.
With love
Yours affly Hattie.

“Eddie”
