Title

Letter from Hattie to Mother, November 28, 1882

Subject

Rhinoviruses; Lips--Abnormalities

Description

Harriet writes to her mother that she has included a large package she hopes makes it to them. If her mother saw her, she'd be greatly concerned. Harriet has a swollen lip that is very serious and affects her speech. She thinks she came down with it because of a cold. She has been treating it at home with simple remedies and avoiding the public. She has been using chewed bread as a poultice and thinks it's working.

Nov 28th 1882
My dear Mother -
I wanted to send
you this little crape hdkf
by the last mail but was
afraid that it was too
heavy. But I am more
hopeful now that it will
go as Miss Butler sent
some like it by the
last mail and they
made no objections to
receiving them at the
Post Office .We often
wish there were a
parcel post between
here and America
so that we could sent

things home as easily
as they can be mailed
from one part of America
to another . If you
could look in upon me
now you would I
imagine want to know
why I have my face
tired up .so I will explain
I have been having rather
a bad time the past few
days with a swollen lip
which interferes very materially
with my speech mastication
and good looks ? I remain
invisible as far as possible
to the outside world but if
I am forced to appear
in public do so behind the
shield of a handkerchief.
Last night Miss Butler + Miss
Niles had gone out to spend

the evening with a party at
Mr Fulton's He is living in Henrys
home while they are away
in the country and seems
to enjoy giving parties .
I was having a good time
by myself poulticing my lip
when I heard Dr Kerr with
Mr Mayne a young
missionary who is staying with
them coming along the
path . I dashed off my
poultice and swept up the
rags behind the bookcase +
made myself as presentable
as possible but I am afraid
my speech was almost too
think to be intelligible By
the way I have just learned
a new way of making poultices
which has the merit of
being convenient at least.It
is a prescription of Mrs Whites
and is said sometimes to
be better than bread + milk

If you will promise not to
be disgusted I will tell you
how it is made .Simply by
taking bread + chewing it until
it is thoroughly masticated
+ soft. I tried it last night + it
really does very well and you
have no trouble of trying to heat it.
Of course I only needed a little
one about an inch square .It
would not be quite such a
convenient process if large
ones were needed . I am
going to poultice my lip again
tonight + hope tomorrow it will
be better as it has already discharged
some . I think Miss Niles is
aching to lance it but "Save me
from the doctors" always expecting
dear good Dr Kerr .I suppose
my swollen lip came from taking
cold. One night last week Miss
Butler had the night mare + called
so that I went to put her out of
distress + then thought I would
go out on the verandah + see how
the comet is getting on .The

[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
Next day I went over to my school on Honam + it rained
and I perhaps
took a little
more .If it serves
me this way
I shall be
careful how I
take cold
again for
it is "mighty"
disagreeable
both for
myself +
my friends .
Mrs Kerr made
me a [illegible] this
morning + sends
love to you all
She always comes when the
mail comes to get the news from Seville
Your aff daughter
Hattie -
