Letter from Harriet to Clara, September 9, 1905

Missionaries; Death; Sick; Disease

Harriet writes to her sister Clara that they traveled to a village nearby recently where missionary friends of theirs used to live. The house they lived in is now dilapidated. She expresses sadness over the death of Mrs. Dyer, continuing on to mention many people back home that she wishes well. They are returning to Canton in a week. Many people are sick in Canton, but the people Harriet knows of are getting better.

My dear Clara
Your letter of Aug 4th
came this morning.
Yesterday Mrs Dobson, Miss
Butler and I went with
Mr Patton to a village
several miles away where
he held a communion service.
It was in a village near
the one where Dr and
Mrs Thomson lived for a
time and where they
were mobbed. As the
place was so near we
walked over after the
service it was about a
mile. We saw the very
house in which they were

no one is living in it now
and it is rather dilapidated.
On the way back I rode
part of the way on Mr
Patton's pony.
I suppose Mill will never
be satisfied to think of any
one but Viola. I wonder
if she will ever come to
China, well it is something
quite beyond our power
to help or hinder so let us
not worry. How sad it
seems about Mrs Dyer. I
knew her so well long ago
She was always such a
fine woman, well it is
all over now
"By so many different ways
God's children go to him"

I am glad she is buried in
the Seville cemetery. How
good she was to everyone
she took such care of her
parents and so many foster
children. Was she in the
Hospital long. I have
always wanted & intended
to write to Mrs Weiss and
have half wanted to write
to Dr Eyman. I feel so
grateful to them all for
I think they tried to do the
best they could for us all.
I see in looking again at your
letter that she was only in
the Hospital a few weeks
and it does not matter to
her now. It seems
strange to think of Lynn
Caughey as a D.D. How

proud Mrs Caughey will
feel. We half expected to
start back to Canton today
but have decided to wait
until the next trip of the
boat a week hence.
We dread the stirring
life in Canton.
Did I write you how
ill one of our teachers
Honny Sin Shang has
been. We are so glad
that she is better so we
hope she can go on with
her school work. ASin
too is better. Miss Read
will perhaps stay with
Mrs [?Foishin?] in Shek Lung.
If so that will make us a
little more quiet.
Now good bye time for the

现在对她来说已经无所谓了。
将 Lynn Caughey 视为 D.D. 似乎很奇怪。
