Feb 13th
Dear Clara
We received your
Sabbath afternoon letter
dated Jan 4th Wednes, are
again on the anxious seat
about you all. But we
always want to know the truth
of the case whatever it is.
We are on the look out
for the next mail which
will be here in three or four
days and we hope to have
better news. My cold clings
to me most persistently but
I hope to get the better of it
soon. When you get this
it will not be more than
a month probably before you
will have Hattie with you
We expect her to be at
home by the last of Apr
letters from Macau last eve

[?repod?] her as better it is not
pleasant to have her away
but it can not be avoided
As we grow older it seems as
though we grow less restive
under what we must receive
as providential dispensations
Hatties nervous system
is now we feel the prime
difficulty. I cannot say that
I feel perfectly at rest about
the other trouble but the Dr
thinks as far as her kidneys
are concerned there is nothing
wrong. Rest will do wonders
for her if she can only get
it. No one here knows of her
plans. Under the circumstances
it is better so. It will not be
divulged here until the last
moment, so she will be spared
all possible rush and excite
ment. No one seems to think
of such an outcome. Her

being under your brothers care
saves a great deal being said.
Miss Butler is ready except a
few last things which will be
quietly attended to. I suppose
when they come up from Macau
next time they will remain here
until they leave for America.
It is only 6 weeks and 4 days more
before the 1st of April. You must
not work hard to get ready for
their coming, remember that
I hope you will see Dr Niles
before her return. We expect
she will bring out another Dr
{lady} with her in fact the Dr
is going to ask the mission to
send for one. The little blind
girls under my charge while
she is away are getting on
well. Hope they will continue
to do so until she comes back.
Everybody looks cold. It is out
patient day and no women
have come but there will be

a plenty as soon as warm
weather comes. The hotter it
is the more sickness and
more work for the Drs. If we
go home next year it will
help us to get through the
months between. You must be
as careful of yourselves as pos
sible. It is perfectly wonderful
how Sarah keeps going I thought
years ago she would be obliged
to stop and rest. Dear little
Sadie Caughey, what a mistake
not to tell her her situation
and help her to look forward
to the Change that is so surely com
ing. Do they suppose she has
had no misgivings herself. If
so has she been left to hear them
alone. It is such a blessing
if she is ready. I can only think
of her as a little girl. It is hard
Emma can not be with her. These
public schools are Cast iron

[Continued vertically on the first page]
If Sadie is living when this letter reaches you tell her
we have thought of
and pray
for her
May she
rest in
Jesus Arms
I have
felt Aunt
Marians
death so
much.
Lovingly
Mattie

Clara
(Sadie Caughey),
