Dear Clara -
Your letters came
Tues afternoon and we were
more than glad to get them
But I was so distressed to
know what a hard busy
time you had had over the
concert just in the midst
of corn planting too. If you
all get on with no one ill
after the experience we shall
be exceedingly glad. This
sitting up all night and
eating the second meal
of the day after midnight
having prayers about that
time too is not conducive
to health as I take it.
It was so nice the concert

proved so successful. I always
repays one for an effort if
it is appreciated. Would like
to see the new barn or as good
as new I suppose it will be
when finished
Friday morn - I tried all day
yesterday to write but it was of
no avail. Dr Broomwall from
Phil put in an appearance
between 6 & 7 in the morning
from the Steamer. She was Dr
Fultons prof, one of them at
Phil Womans Medical College
A woman of course - and quite
a distinguished one. Well she
had come down from Shanghai
on perpose to see the Dr's work
here in the hospital so of course
we want her to make the very
most of her visit as she goes
away this eve. She is a very nice
lady and seems much interested

in everything. You will
remember that Miss Patterson
and Miss Shaffner came to
us after Dr Niles left. Well Miss
Shaffner is to leave for America
not to return. A case of nervous
ness, and let me say unfitness
for the field. Dr Kerr says she
could not advise her going
but he is slow about sending
missionaries home. Dr Fulton
has done so and is glad she
has not asked him to sign the
medical certificate. Young
doctors do many things that will
not bear the inspection of old
ones. I presume she will be
perfectly well when she reaches
home. But she is not at all
desirous to remain and it seems
much better she should go.
She and Dr Broomwall leave
this afternoon- and unfortunately

the mail does also. Dr Kerr
was out all afternoon yesterday
with the lady physicians. Dr Swan
is in Macao on sick leave
and I sat in the study and
answered "professional calls"
One, or two of my arrangements
did not hold but most of them
did. You know I wrote about
the Dr being called to attend
upon the Tartar General last
year and he was successful
in curing him of a painful
abcess. He then gave him
$140.00 to aid in publishing
some medical books he had
been translating and yesterday
he sent him $210.00 more. The
hospital [--has--] society print his
books and have the prof[--f--]its
of them so it is indirectly a
donation to the hospital. I sup
pose the General will think the
Dr will have the [illegible]

[Note: Letter concludes sideways on page one]
be so disappointed if you do not. This letter is for
all. I can not
possibly write
more.
lovingly
Sister Mattie
Henry and the
boys seem
well. Boys
growing very
fast.

Shaffner
