Title
Letter from Mattie to Emily
Subject
Cerebrovascular disease; Paralysis; Aging; Disease susceptibility
Description
Mattie is glad that Emily had such a nice trip with Hattie. Orion had a stroke of paralysis. Their cousin Mari was anxious about it all since Orion is over 60. This also makes Mattie anxious since the Dr. is turning 63. This makes her think about the ages and health of her family members. Miss Lewis cannot believe that Mattie has never gotten sick.

My dear Emily
The letters we received
by the last mail are all up
at brother Henrys, so I can
only answer them as I
remember about what you
wrote It is delightful to think
of your having that delight-
ful trip with Hattie It will
be something which it
will always be pleasant to
remember. I was so sorry
to learn that Orion had
had a stroke of paralysis and
that he did not feel he would
ever be any better. Cousin
Mari told me when I was
there that she felt so anxious
about him that when a person
was over sixty their lives were
very uncertain. I have thought
of that remark so often since
I was married. Dr will be
63 to morrow. I sometimes
wish if he could be comfortably
well that I could know he would
live to be as old as Father is
Only think if we were spared
that would give us 20 years
together. But physicians
scarcely ever live to be very
old. But I shall always be so
thankful for whatever of time
we do have together. It must
have been such a disap
pointment to Cousin Sarah
to give up the light visions
she had for herself and her
children. But people can be
very happy and useful without
much of the filthy lucre and
that is such a blessing. Is Emily
Sturtevants husband a Christian
If not it seems as if her life must
be very full of anxiety. I thought
of you as being at home Thanks
giving knew you would try
to be. It must be so hard for
cousin Harriet after her life
in the city to do so much
out of door work. And it does
seem wonderful that Uncle
Augustus is so well To think
he is over 40 years older than
I am. And I am so surprized
that Sarah can go on as she
does. It seemed when I was at
home as if she must give
up soon. To end all I am
surprized at myself also. Miss
Lewis says she can not realize
I have ever been ill. I go and
go every day in the week, do
not take any medicine but fall
to eating "Chuk" Hattie will tell
you what that is and forth with
I am all right. Now if Mary has
the trouble she had when I was
at home if she will just get
rice boil it until it is very soft
say 1/2 hour then eat it with
nothing but a little salt and some
milk it will soon put her all
right. She much keep it up until
she is all right. I lived on it
once here 2 weeks at one time
The Dr says he can always
cure [?Dire?] --- if people will do
just as he says, or rather he says
he does not fear to undertake
to cure them. She must not
let this difficulty run on but
just try this remedy. Did I
tell you in my last of a Mrs
Lwing and her son who have come
to Canton from Brooklyn New York
The Mother is boarding at Miss
Butlers and we have the son
He has over studied and had to
give up all effort of the mind
can not read or write There is a
[Continued vertically on the first page]
possibility he may go into work here as a Bible Agent
if Dr Gulick will give him employment. He thinks
the travelling
about will be
a benefit to him
He occupies
the "prophets
chamber" is
a very pleasant
young man
and we all
enjoy him very
much. Have
tried to sew a
little today
but interrup
tions have been
so manifold
very little was
accomplished.
With much love
Mattie
Emily Sturtevants
