Report of Mission Work
under the charge of
H Noyes. 1882 -
During the past year there
have been in the Training
School for Women and the
Girl's Boarding School
one hundred and ten scholars
forty two women and sixty-
eight girls. Of this number
thirteen have been received
into the church eight women
and five girls. Three more
have applied for baptism and
several others have expressed
a wish to do so. Four of the
women from the Training
School have commenced work
as Bible Readers, one has taken
up the study of medicine and
another has commenced teaching
^Three of the girls from the Boarding School have also commenced teaching
Some of the women in the

Training School have been in
attendance during only a part
of the year. The progress
nd deportment of the scholars
in both these schools throughout
the year has been most
satisfactory, This year
completes the first decade
since these schools were opened.
During that time eighty-six
of the scholars have been received
into the First and Second
churches and forty-two have
been employed as helpers by our
own or other missions ----
Day Schools.
Ho Nam --
The number of scholars
enrolled in the Ho Nam school
was forty, Some of these have
been studying for several
years and have gone farther
in their studies than any other
day scholars that I have
had having committed to memory
nearly the whole of the

New Testament and read five
volumes of Bible Stories and
Pilgrim's Progress besides several
smaller books. The Bible Woman
who formerly lived at this school
has been laboring in the
country the past year where
she finds the work much more
encouraging.
[?In Wa Sai?] - There have been
in this school twenty-one scholars
Most of them have been regular
in attendance and have been made
good progress, The meetings
for women however have not been
well attended and as the school
was near another of the Mission
schools it has been thought best
not to continue it in the same
place another year ,
East Gate ,
The school at the
East Gate has been opened for
several years and as the teacher
is well known in the vicinity she

has no difficulty in securing
scholars, There have been this
year thirty three scholars, who
have been regular in attendance
and have made good progress
in their studies The meetings
for women have been well attended.
Hok-In Li.
In this school there
have been twenty three scholars
enrolled but many of them
have been irregular in attendance.
A Bible Woman lives at the
school and visits daily in the
families in the vicinity of this
school and the one at the East Gate.
Mau On Li.
The school at Mau On Li
was opened just at the close of last
year. There have been
twenty-five scholars this year
nearly all of whom have attended
very regularly and been diligent
in their studies The school
has been in all respects the
most satisfactory of all my
day schools. The teacher has
been very faithful and spared

no pains in teaching her
scholars and they have done
well in all their studies, There
has always been a good number
of women present at the meetings
and they have seemed attentive
and interested ,
Second Street.
The school at Second
Street was opened this year
The teacher is one of the girls from
the Boarding School who was
married last year to one of
the assistants in the Baptist
Mission . Her Mother lives with her
and labors as a Bible Woman
in the vicinity , When the school
was first opened there was a large
number of scholars forty-four
but after a time some opposition
was made and the number
was somewhat reduced.
There has always been a
very large attendance at the
meetings , during the first six
months there were usually from
sixty to one hundred present
The number was so large

that it was quite impossible for
them all to find even standing
room in the school-room and
it was found necessary to rent
the building adjoining and
have two services at the same
time so that all could hear,
I have never opened a school
in any place in the city before
where the people appeared so
friendly and it has seemed
very pleasant and encouraging
This school is a long
distance from any other and
in a place where as yet there
has been little or no mission
work done.
Un Ha Tiu
This school was
opened this year in a village
some ten miles North of Canton.
There have been in all eighteen
scholars but some of them
have been irregular in
attendance as they have
been obliged to work --
sometimes only studying in

the evening, A few have been
able to give enough time to
their books to make very
satisfactory progress and all
have endeavored to be present
whenever I have visited the
school. The teacher was formerly
in the Training School and
studied medicine for a time
As her school has been
small she has been able to
spend some time in working as
a Bible Reader visiting the
families in the village -
Bible Readers -
Of the seven Bible
Women who have been under
my charge three have been
laboring in the city, two in the
western suburbs and two in the
country, Eight of the women
from the Training School
have spent more or less time
in visiting in the wards of the
Hospital and have been

very much interested in the
patients , Seven women and
one little girl from the Hospital
have united with the church
during the past year .
On several occasions a large
number of women have come
into the city from a village
some distance away and expressly
to receive Christian instruction
At one time a company of over
one hundred came ----
A children's service has been
held every Sabbath Morning
through the year at which
from eighty to one hundred
have been present --

H Noyes
