Letter from Mattie to the Ones at Home, January 1, 1877

New Years; Psalms (Music)--90th psalm; Mail steamers; Methodist Church--Missions

Mattie writes home wishing everyone a happy New Year. It was Mr. Whitehead's last Sabbath and he sang from Psalm 90, 12th verse. Mattie spent the morning with Lucy. She reflects on the new year. She looks forward to the prospect of semi-monthly mail. There are new Methodist brethren joining them. She says that Mr. and Mrs. Henry will be "valuable people here."

Dear ones at home
I wanted so much
to put a note into the mail
this morning wishing you
all a happy New Year but
was down at Mr Preston's
went yesterday afternoon and
came back about 8 o clock
this morning. It was Mr
Whiteheads last Sabbath for
preaching before he went
home so of course I was quite
anxious to hear him His
text was taken from the
90 Psalm 12th verse to teach
us to number our days that
we may apply our hearts unto

Wisdom. I never heard a dis-
course that seemed more
solemn, but he dwelt upon
the [?eartward?] side so much as to
give the whole rather a gloom
aspect. Dr Graves when he was
up here to day said he told
Mrs Graves afterwards that if he
thought there was any missionary
present who would be taken
home before the next New Year
he should feel like congratula-
ting him. I was up quite early
this morning came up from
Kuk Tan, had breakfast with
Lucy picked up my washing and
have been in the parlor all day
receiving calls. We were favored
with host of Chinese about the
same number of foreigners as
usual. Mr Sabbat gave us a
good long call. This eve, Dr Happer
and John went down to monthly
concert and Mrs Happer came over

and spent the eve here Miss Lucy
was not very well did not go out
so we had a prayer meeting of our
own. I have spent a very happy
day, last night thought I would
watch the old year out but grew
tired and finally just said to my
self, Well I have nothing to do, no
resolutions to make, if God spares
my life I shall be very glad to work
longer, if he takes me I have no
further preparation to make when
he calls I will have grace given
to go willingly I trust joyfully and
with this thought I turned over and
fell asleep. You can hardly im-
agine what fine weather we
are having, just perfect. How
much I would like to know how
the day has been spent at home
hope it has been a happy day to all
the loved ones there. I think of you
now as about receiving letters saying
I am better. We look for our mail

tomorrow. There is some hope we
may soon have a semi monthly
mail which we can appreciate
after our long deprivation of it.
The two new Methodist brethren
who arrived more then a fortnight
ago have been in Fat-Shan ever
since but I believe are expected
to take up their abode next us to
day. Henry's old teacher Leung hopes
to be so fortunate as to become
the teacher of one of them but
Dr Happer feels sure they will
not employ him because he
does not talk plain. Mrs Piercy
is very miserable indeed was not
able to see any one to day.
We are now to have our Sab-
bath eve meetings at Mr Henry's
Dr Carrow and his wife did not
wish to have them there any
longer so they are in the old place
again. The hospital instrument
stands in the southwest and
the deck in the southeast corner

here they seem willing to step into the breach at all times
The social eve is to be
there on Wednes. eve, the
first we have had for
a long time. It was put
off twice on account of
my illness, once for Mrs
Carrow's so we have had
quite a dearth of news.
Mrs Preston says her
guest room and bed are
always at my disposal
when she has no com-
pany so you see I am
provided for.
Now with many
earnest wishes for the
welfare usefulness and
happiness of each dear
one I must say good
