Los Angeles [--2--] Feb 2d 78
My dear Father
I was glad to get
your good letter this week and
also Mother's... I will answer
hers next week. I have mis-
laid the letters but I do
not remember that there were
any questions to be answered
in it. Am glad to hear that
you are all well. I got letters
from Mattie & Hattie yesterday
& so know you will have
heard from them a few days
before you get this. It seems
nice that Mattie seems so com-
fortable. I hope she may be
able to do something more in
the mission field. It would be
such a satisfaction to her.
Yesterday was Chinese New Years
The Chinese here had the chapel

& school room nicely fixed
up and received visitors en-
tertaining them with cake tea
oranges &c &c. Our weather is
not much like the freezing
weather that you speak about.
It is now just like bright
spring weather. Things are
growing nicely and everything
looks green. I suppose you
will want to know what our
prospects are. Well we are
still "holding the fort" here. I
got a letter from1 Dr Lowrie
last Monday in which he
says the Board leave the
whole matter of sale & transfer
of this station in the hands
of Mr Cordit Dr Kerr & myself.
If we concur they (the Board)
will sell to the U P Board. I

have written to Kerr & Cordit
& will hear from them in
a few days. I know however
that Mr Cordit is in favor
of the plan, and do not suppose
Dr Kerr has any objection, so
that so far as our side of the
matter stands the thing is substan-
tially finished. Mr Nevin has
moved down here with his family
& I suppose there is not
much doubt but they will stay,
although he came down "in
advance" (as Dr Lowrie writes) "of any
formal action of his Board." He
(Mr Nevin) wrote to the Secretary of the
U P Board about the middle
of Jan and expects a reply
soon. The strong probability there-
fore is that we shall leave
here before a great while, not
before the middle of this month &
perhaps not before the End.

Dr Lowrie suggests that we
go to Sacramento until our return
to China or to San Francisco if
the missionaries here think that would
be better. He writes me real
good kind letters. Aside from
the trouble of moving I presume
we shall find just as good
& useful work at either of these
places as here & will I suppose
so far as we can see now
leave for China in the fall. I
find the way opens up as fast as
we need to know it. The matter of
leaving here & when to go and where
to go has not troubled me at all.
I am glad you like baby's picture.
He has a real intelligent interesting
little face. Among his other qualities
he seems to think a great deal of
his father, not but that he thinks a
great deal of his mother & his aunt
May A---n too. He still keeps well
& weighs 23 1/2 lbs. The are all well
as usual Ever so much love for all
from Henry.

Kerr & Cordit
UP Board
Jan

May A---n
