Letter from Henry to Sarah, August 17, 1878

Henry writes to Sarah asking her to thank their mother for the birthday letter. He writes about being in San Francisco and Placeville where Mrs. Wilson has been helping two Chinese women who wanted to get out of their life of bondage and go to a women's home. The women were brought to Henry's house in the middle of the night. The masters of the women went to the sheriff to get the women back but the sheriff protected the women.

Sacramento Aug 17th
1878
My dear Sarah
I must write a few lines
to you this morning. Tell mother I
thank her very much for the good
birth-day letter. I guess I must
write to you about my visit to
[--Placeville--] San Francisco. I went
Tuesday & came back Friday. The
way it happened when I was at
Placeville Mrs Wilson who is working
for the Chinese then told me about
two Chinese woman who wished to
escape from the life of bondage
which they were leading but did
not know how to get away. I suppose
you know the character of most
of the Chinese women on this coast.
Mrs Wilson had told them about the
Womans Home in San Francisco &
they were anxious to get there. She
did not think it would do for
them to try to go by train from there
but said they could be taken by

private conveyance to Sacramento.
She said they would [--not--] need
to stop in Sacramento a day or
so perhaps & I told her to send
them right to our house. They
came [--yest--] Tuesday about
10-o-clock and I start
at 4-o-clock for San Fran-
cisco and got through without
any detention. They brought
them from Placeville in the
night. A man with one
horse brought them. He had
some [--Ha--] hay on the bottom
of his wagon. They lay down
on the hay and were covered
up with blankets so as to
seem like a load of something
after they got out some dis-
tance they got on the seat
they had a long hard ride
but got through safely and
at 1/2 past 9 PM I landed

them safely in San Francisco
at the Home. It was a
sort of underground railroad
experience. I thought of the
way the negroes used to
escape. The masters of
these women went to the
sheriff[--s--] at 11-o-clock AM
on Tuesday to try to get them
arrested but the minister
there had already told the
officers about it and the
sheriff told them that if they
undertook to hinder the
escape he would arrest them
Now I must close as I am
going with some friends to
see the capital, will write
more at some future time.
